Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of refined bleached and deodorized (RBD) palm olein samples between 3600 and 2800 cm−1 were used for quantitative determination of the content of tert‐butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). The method was based on sodium chloride (NaCl) windows with transmission path fixed at 50 µm at room temperature. Fifty stripped oil samples spiked with known amounts of TBHQ concentrations up to 300 mg/kg (ppm) were separated into two sets for calibration and validation models based on partial least squares (PLS) analyses. The accuracy of the method was comparable to that of the method established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9961 and standard error of calibration of (SEC) 5.06. The model was validated, and the R2 of validation and standard error of prediction were 0.9951 and 6.49, respectively. The standard deviation of difference for repeatability for the method was comparable to that for the IUPAC method. The new FTIR method developed for determining TBHQ in palm olein was demonstrated to be efficient, accurate, rapid and required minimum solvent as only acetone was used for cleaning NaCl windows. The method is suitable for routine quality control analysis.

A simple, rapid, and direct FTIR spectroscopic method was developed for the determination of BHT content in refined, bleached, and deodorized (RBD) palm olein and RBD palm oil. The method used sodium chloride windows with a 50-mm transmission path. Fifty stripped oil samples of both RBD palm olein and RBD palm oil were spiked with known amounts of BHT concentrations up to 300 mg/kg (ppm). The data were separated into two sets for calibration and validation using partial least squares models. FTIR results for both oils correlated well with results obtained by the IUPAC HPLC-based method. For RBD palm olein, the coefficient of determination (R 2 ) was 0.9907 and the SE of calibration (SEC) was 8.47 ppm. For RBD palm oil, an R 2 of 0.9848 and an SEC of 10.73 ppm were achieved. Because of the significant decrease in analysis time and reduction in solvent usage, this FTIR method for BHT is especially well suited for routine quality control applications in the palm oil industry.

A rapid method to determine butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) in refined bleached and deodorized (RBD) palm oil and RBD palm olein was developed. The two sets of 50 stripped oils of RBD palm olein and RBD palm oil were spiked with known amounts of BHA concentrations up to 300 mg/kg (ppm) for calibration samples. The "leave-one-out" cross-validation procedure was used to verify the calibration model. Partial least squares (PLS) calibration models for predicting BHA were developed by using the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy spectral regions from 3486 to 3140 cm -1 and 1140 to 898 cm -1 . The accuracy of the method was comparable to that of the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), with coefficients of determination (R 2 ) of 0.9939 from calibration samples of RBD palm olein and an R 2 of 0.9884 for RBD palm oil samples. The results indicate that FTIR in conjunction with PLS is a useful analytical tool for simple and rapid quantitation of BHA in RBD palm oil and RBD palm olein for routine analysis.
