The purpose of this paper is to propose some ways of reading two wordless picture storybooks which have recently been published, by Suzy Lee and Bernardo Carvalho respectively. The objective is to analyse the ways in which the visual discourse can create an effective narrative using a variety of pictorial strategies. These works were not idly chosen, however. Both are concerned with ecoliteracy, having narratives that tell a story about a specific relationship between humans and the sea. Depicting maritime scenarios, the two picture books promote a special and symbolic approach to the natural environment. The narratives help to configure the environment as more than merely an undifferentiated space inhabited by living beings, this being the most elementary concept of ''environment''; rather, it is seen as an ecological arena involving the interaction between the landscape and the living beings it harbours. As such, the books assume the role of promoting not only habits of proto-literacy, but of ecoliteracy too.

Palavras-chave: metalinguagem, consciência morfológica, perturbação de leitura e escrita.ABSTRACT -This study aims to verify the existence of a correlation between morphological awareness and reading and writing performance (more precisely, in the reading component) in children with and without reading and witting difficulties or disorders. To fulfill this objective, a sample of European Portuguese-speaking children was tested with two assessment instruments: the "Reading Age Test" and a Morphological Awareness Test specifically created for this purpose. The experimental group (EG) includes children who have been diagnosed with reading and writing difficulties or disorders; the control group (CG) has not. After analyzing the data, it was concluded that there is a statistically significant difference between the groups of children in the study, since the CG reveals a better performance than the EG in both tests applied. The results also show a statistically significant correlation between the children's reading performance and their morphological awareness. The correlation appears to be considerably stronger in the EG than in the CG. Thus, we concluded that stimulation of morphological awareness can effectively facilitate and help children's reading skill development, especially in children having difficulties in these areas.

A historical center can be defined as the oldest part of a city where a significant part of the building stock dates back to the early stages of urban growth. Historical centers often contain special urban fabrics with unique, historic, social and cultural identity. Owing to this, they have been subject to special urban planning interventions in order not only to protect the existing urban fabric and its originality, but also to revert depopulation and built deterioration processes aiming to make these old centers attractive and functional again. However, in the inter-urban domain, there is a deficit of spatial planning research, and the delimitation of historical centers is a topic that has been under explored. This paper describes a morphological approach for delimiting the historical center of Guarda, Portugal. Methodologically, the work uses building stock-age data from eight periods between <1919 to 2011 and is supported by both statistical and spatial analysis. Statistically, the urban evolution of the city was analyzed through threshold values and five novel building indexes. Spatially, the work involved disaggregated GIS analysis to map the evolution of built-up areas and to identify the consolidated urban areas. A sensitivity analysis was also performed to assess the influence of some parameters on the obtained boundary. Results indicated that the historical center of Guarda was consolidated in the 1960s and, since then, has been relatively unchanged. The obtained boundary shows a suitable spatial adjustment considering the consolidated urban area and the official boundary included in the Urban Rehabilitation Area.
