This study aimed to evaluate the physical and physicochemical characterization of 'mangabeira' fruits in the western region of Bahia. Three hundred fruits were sampled from ten matrices, which were collected in an area of the municipalities of Angical, Barreiras and St Desiderio and conducted to the Seed Laboratory of UNEB. For the physical assessments, longitudinal and transversal diameters of the fruit, fruit weight, total seed weight per fruit, weight of the pulp and peel, and yield of pulp and peel were considered. As for the physicochemical evaluations, the fruit pulp was subjected to the determinations of pH, soluble solids content, titratable acidity and ratio. For the variables, longitudinal and transversal diameters, the weight of pulp and peel, seed weight, fruit weight and yield of pulp and peel, the means were, respectively, 32.34 and 31.87 mm, 14.77, 2.40 and 17.17 g and 85.93%.
Abstract:The host status of eighteen progenies and two cultivars (FB 200 Yellow Master and FB 300 Araguari)
Scab caused by the Cladosporium cladosporioides complex is one of the most important diseases affecting passion fruit yield and fruit quality. Standard area diagrams are useful tools to improve the accuracy and reliability of the estimates of disease severity in many pathosystems. The interpretation of the accuracy of the resulting disease data may be the basis for providing better disease management. This study aimed to develop and validate standard area diagrams (SADs) to quantify scab severity of entire‐margined leaves of sour passion fruit plants. The SADs are composed of ten images of scab severity values (0.4%, 3.5%, 5.4%, 8.0%, 11.1%, 16.2%, 26.1%, 38.2%, 47.9% and 58.9%). Twenty raters (ten experienced and ten inexperienced ones) evaluated the SADs. The raters estimated the same set of fifty images twice. In the examination, the SADs were used, while in the second examination, they were not used. Accuracy was significantly improved by using the SADs. The coefficients of bias (Cb) were 0.96 and 0.98 for the experienced raters and 0.75 and 0.98 for the inexperienced raters without and with SADs, respectively. The correlation coefficient (r) values were 0.95 and 0.97 for the experienced raters and 0.89 and 0.97 for the inexperienced raters without and with the use of the SADs, respectively. Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (ρc) values were 0.91 and 0.95 for the experienced raters and 0.66 and 0.95 for the inexperienced raters without and with the use of the SADs, respectively. Moreover, the coefficient of determination (R2) significantly improved when the SADs were used. The SADs proposed in this study, if properly used, may improve both the accuracy and reliability during the evaluation of scab severity of entire‐margined leaves of sour passion fruit plants.
Screening passion fruit genotypes to target resistance to scab and bacterial blight may play an important role in reducing the application of chemical products and decreasing losses caused by these diseases. It is likely that resistant genotypes can be found in ongoing breeding programs targeting production traits. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the host status of eighteen passion fruit genotypes from the Breeding Program of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa and two cultivars (FB 200 Yellow Master and FB 300 Araguari) of yellow passion fruit to scab (Cladosporium herbarum) and bacterial blight (Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. passiflorae). The fungus and the bacterium were artificially inoculated on wounded leaves at concentrations of 1 x 10 6 spores mL -1 and 1 x 10 8 cfu mL -1 . Scab incidence and severity were assessed at 7, 14, 21, and 31 days after inoculation (DAI); whereas bacterial blight evaluations were performed at 10, 20, 28, and 44 DAI. The genotypes CRP 01-12 to CRP 16-12 and CRP 19-12 are moderately resistant to scab. All genotypes are highly susceptible to bacterial blight. Key words: Bacterial spot. Cladosporiosis. Cladosporiose.
