Objective The aim of this paper is to analyse the quality of life (QOL) of undergraduate nursing students. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study with 206 students conducted in July 2013, in the city of Picos/PI, Brazil. Data were collected using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. The Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to analyse the data with a significance level of 5%. Results The domains with the best average scores were Physical (69.4) and Social Relations (74.3), and the domains with the worst average scores were Psychological (68.5) and Environment (54.2). For the overall assessment, the average was 66.6+10.8. A statistical significance was observed when crossing QOL with number of children (p = 0.029), where students without children performed better. Conclusion These results allow the early detection of difficulties experienced by nursing students and may support strategies that benefit the search for solutions to conflicts that affect QOL.

INTRODUÇÃODiante da complexidade que envolve o processo de adoecimento e, levando-se em consideração o papel comunitário exercido pelas universidades, é fundamental que existam estratégias que auxiliem as necessidades de ABSTRACTTaking as its starting point the experiences of undergraduate nursing students from the Federal University of Piauí acting as extension teachers, health education can be developed about sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, and drugs in the context of a public school in the interior of Piauí. This study reports on the experience of activities in a university extension program, "Health Education Actions with Primary and Secondary School Students", developed by undergraduate Nursing program students working with students in their first year of high school, through workshops. The execution of the project proved quite relevant because it was possible to inform the students through exhibits and dialogue on various topics relevant to the teenager's context, and also bring out knowledge about the school environment for the population that lacked such information, thus outlining an exchange of knowledge among the participants. saúde advindas do meio social no qual estão inseridas.
Objective: To analyze the frequency of cardiovascular risk factors among children and adolescents, and their association with metabolic syndrome. Methods: This was an analytical, quantitative study using a stratified sample of 421 children and adolescents from 9 -19 years of age, selected by simple random sampling in 12 municipal public schools located in the Northeast region of Brazil. Physical inactivity and weight excess were the factors investigated. Metabolic syndrome was identified based on the adopted criteria for age. Results: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 4.1%; sedentary lifestyle was 30.2%; and weight excess was 20.5%. Higher values of body mass index were associated with the presence of the syndrome. Mean blood pressure, triglycerides, blood glucose, and waist circumference were increased in 11.9%, 20.9%, 0.5%, 8.6% of the sample, respectively; 26.1% presented low HDL-c. Conclusion: A substantial portion of those involved presented the risk factors assessed, as well as weight excess association with the components of the syndrome.
