Objective:To develop and validate an educational technology focused on prevention of metabolic syndrome among adolescents. Methods:This was methodological research. Using an integrative review, the available publications on the subject were analyzed. Then, this knowledge was used to describe the theoretical content and, with the help of a graphic designer, the art and layout of the pages were developed. In the third phase, the booklet was evaluated and validated by 21 specialists and 39 adolescents. Data collection included three different questionnaires, according to the focus of evaluation of each group of participants, analyzed for reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha) and agreement by Infraclass Correlation Coefficient. Results:The mean score attributed by technical content experts was 91.7%, and the content validity index, measured by experts responses, was 0.98, showing high reliability and agreement. In addition, the level of agreement of the positive responses given by adolescents was 88.4%. Conclusion:the educational booklet has proved to be a valid and reliable tool to be used for promoting adolescent health.
Objective The aim of this paper is to analyse the quality of life (QOL) of undergraduate nursing students. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study with 206 students conducted in July 2013, in the city of Picos/PI, Brazil. Data were collected using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. The Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to analyse the data with a significance level of 5%. Results The domains with the best average scores were Physical (69.4) and Social Relations (74.3), and the domains with the worst average scores were Psychological (68.5) and Environment (54.2). For the overall assessment, the average was 66.6+10.8. A statistical significance was observed when crossing QOL with number of children (p = 0.029), where students without children performed better. Conclusion These results allow the early detection of difficulties experienced by nursing students and may support strategies that benefit the search for solutions to conflicts that affect QOL.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between health literacy and medication adherence of patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Method: Quantitative cross-sectional study developed in five Family Health Strategies in the city of Picos, Piauí. Participants comprised 78 users of health services. The “Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults” and the “Treatment Adherence Measurement Test” forms were applied to obtain sociodemographic variables. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Results: Regarding health literacy, 51.3% of the participants were considered inadequate, and 87.2% were adherent to the drug treatment. The average of health literacy varied according to the level of medication adherence and sociodemographic variables. Conclusion: Most patients reported to adhere to the medication. Implications for practice: This study identified the health literacy and medication adherence profile of the patients, thus subsidizing the planning of nursing interventions in the attention of diabetes mellitus.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of arterial hypertension and the risk factors associated with it among adolescents. Methods: Cross-sectional study developed with 211 adolescent students. The prevalence of arterial hypertension was assessed and its relationship with weight excess, physical activity and capillary glucose was verified. Results: The prevalence of arterial hypertension was 13.7%. No association was found between high blood pressure and weight excess and levels of physical activity. Adolescents with high capillary glucose presented greater chances of developing arterial hypertension. Conclusion: The studied adolescents presented a high prevalence of arterial hypertension. The cases of hypertension were only associated with high capillary glucose.
The objective of the study was to evaluate some risk factors for increases in systemic arterial blood pressure. This transversal study was carried out with 145 individuals from 12 to18 years of age at two state schools in the city of Pico in the state of Piauí in Brazil. The majority were female (62.8%). The median age was 14.8 years (±3.19). It was ascertained that 13 of the subjects (9.0%) were overweight . Elevations in waist circumference were found in 31 (21.4%) and 76 (52.4%) had elevated arterial blood levels. There was no statistically-significant association between the above-cited risk factors and gender (p=0.088; 0.999; 0.204, respectively). However, 44.8% of the adolescents had at least one risk factor associated with arterial hypertension; 15.9% had two, and 2.1% had three. The study confirms the influence of the risk factors on arterial pressure values among adolescents. Being aware of these factors means that nurses can intervene with health education measures.
Aim:To compare the knowledge and behavior of adolescents with risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus after the implementation of two educational strategies. Method: Comparative and intervention study with the participation of 60 students from two public schools divided into two groups: GA (n = 30) and GB (n = 30). GA received individual educational intervention, while GB had group educational intervention. We used questionnaires to assess the level of knowledge prior to intervention, in the day after it, and 60 days after the interventions, when we also assessed the intention of changing habits. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in the level of knowledge as a result of both interventions. By comparing GA and GB after the interventions, we observed that the intention to change habits were similar in both groups. Conclusion:Both educational interventions were effective in raising knowledge and can be used in schools for the prevention of T2DM in at-risk adolescents.
