Background. Occupational justice and related concepts can inform practices directed at injustice and the lack of rights in daily life. Brazilian ideas about social occupational therapy seem to be similar to these concepts about inequality. Purpose. This study aimed to answer the questions, “Do occupational justice concepts inform occupational therapists’ professional actions?” and “How are occupational justice concepts connected to Brazilian ideas about social occupational therapy?” Method. A secondary analysis was undertaken of a scoping review using occupational justice and related concepts as keywords. Descriptive and categorical analyses were used to classify the extract data. Findings. We selected 42 articles that specify occupational therapy practices, classified as individual approaches ( n = 13), individual-integrated-with-social approaches ( n = 22), and social approaches ( n = 7). It was found that occupational justice concepts have informed individual approaches and that the second and third approaches can be connected with social occupational therapy. Implications. Dialogue for sharing knowledge, concepts, and practices of occupational therapy worldwide can be inspired by this review.
The concept of occupational justice relates to social inequality focusing on the needs of humans as occupational beings in their contexts. This article aims to examine the scholarly evolution of the term occupational justice and its related concepts. The article reports (a) the historical development of the term and (b) a thematic mapping of issues addressed by articles that used the occupational justice concept and its related terms. A scoping review was performed where 553 articles were found. We found the first article in 1974, and it was described as the first article that used the term. Two main sets of articles were analyzed: the ones that presented individual approaches and the ones framed by a collective approach. The review contributes to a better understanding of the use of the term occupational justice and its related concepts, and reflects on the impact of collective approaches to socially responsive occupation-based interventions.
In the 1980s, during the social occupational therapy construction process in Brazil, there was a shift from the centrality of health and illness to social phenomena resulting from social and cultural inequalities. It is worth noting that social occupational therapy has gained notoriety both in Brazil and internationally. Despite the advances in this area, the literature points out that the main bottlenecks for the formation of social occupational therapy have been the insufficiency of human resources and the almost exclusive emphasis of the curricular guidelines of occupational therapy courses on the health area. In this scenario, it becomes relevant to deepen the analysis of how social occupational therapy has been constituted in other courses in the country, in addition to the state of São Paulo, the cradle of its emergence. This experience report aims to discuss the constitution of social occupational therapy, based on the historical process that enabled its emergence, its advances and setbacks in the UFMG undergraduate course. It is verified that social occupational therapy is gradually being consolidated in the course at UFMG, legitimizing the space for the education of occupational therapists. It is evident that the configuration of this area occurs in a field of active forces, as it advances, retreats and/or maintains itself. The power of its expansion lies in the combination of the dimensions of teaching, research, extension, public policies, and service practices.
Introduction Occupational therapy is the profession with more historical visibility related to the health field. Within the scope of the public policy of social assistance, its insertion started to be officially foreseen from 2011, however its action has been developed in the beginning of occupational therapists’ action in Brazil. Objective To present the profile of occupational therapists inserted in the services and/or programs of the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS) in Minas Gerais (MG) state, Brazil. Method Documentary research was carried out, using the SUAS Census as a source of information. Quantitative data from municipalities with occupational therapists per year, by equipment, services, and role between the years 2012 to 2019 were mapped. The data were treated using simple statistics, and the results were organized into analytical categories, which were part of the discussion of the results. Results Data from occupational therapists were found in SUAS equipment for Basic Social Protection, Special Social Protection, and at the management level. A relevant number of occupational therapists in services for people with disabilities stood out. Conclusion The constitution of social occupational therapy, the recognition of the profession's specialization in social contexts, and the provision of this professional in the SUAS has expanded the debate and the possibilities of action with a focus on social protection. Other studies are suggested about the professionals’ profile, as well as the practices developed by them, aiming to understand their actions, application of theoretical-practical knowledge and contribution of the specificity of occupational therapy in this context.
