Palavras-chave: abrigos móveis, consumo, frequência respiratória, ganho de peso, temperatura retal Performance, physiological and behavioral measurements of dairy calves in different housing systems: rainy season ABSTRACT -The objective of this trial was to evaluate performance, thermal comfort and behavior of crossbred Holstein x Zebu dairy calves kept in different housing systems during the rainy season (December to April). Twentyfour calves were raised from birth to 70 days of age in one of the following housing systems: hutches; shadecloth; or no shelter. Rectal temperature and respiratory rate measurements were taken twice a day (8:00 AM and 3:00 PM) when calves were 1, 4 and 9 weeks old. Respiratory rate was measured counting the number of respiratory movements per minute and rectal temperatures were taken with clinical thermometers. Behavior evaluation was done by visual observation of the animals every 10 min for a period of 24 h. There were no differences among the housing systems on body weight, average daily weight gain, starter intake and feed efficiency. Calves raised with no shelter showed increased rectal temperatures at the afternoon. It can be concluded that use of hutches might not be necessary considering that calves spent most of their time outside. Calves raised with no shelter had higher rectal temperatures and respiratory rates and were unable to maintain these variables under physiological conditions. Calves performance was satisfactory in all three housing systems evaluated.
Thirty Holstein calves from birth up to 160-170kg of body weight were randomly allotted to the following experimental treatments: I-whole milk; II-whole milk up to 100kg of body weight, and from this weight on, the supply of more liquid diet was from a commercial finishing milk replacer, added to the milk, up to slaughter; III-whole milk up to the 10 th day of life, starter commercial milk replacer up to 100kg of body weight and finishing commercial milk replacer up to slaughter. There was no significant difference among treatments for calves daily weight gain (NS), age at slaughter (P=.06701) and carcass rate (P=0,21527); however, calves on treatment III showed higher dry matter feed intake (P=.00055) and, consequently lower feed efficiency (P=.00021). There was no significant difference among treatments for scours (P>.05) and nasal flow. The utilization of the tested milk replacer would be economically feasible if the price of 1kg of de product (powder) would be lower than 6.4 times the price of 1kg of whole milk.
Pesq. Vet. Bras. 32(8) The daily weight gain, behavioral activities (grazing, ruminating and water consumption) and the number of rumen protozoa, pH, NH 3, and the osmolarity of rumen ϐluid was evaluated for four groups of six calves HPB/Zebu submitted to daily intake of 15, 30, 60 and 90g of NaCl during 135 days (9 th Jan. to 24 th May 2008).Throughout the experimental period the calves were in perfect health condition and did not show any signs suggestive of chronic sodium poisoning. There was no signiϐicant difference in average daily gain of the calves as the intake of NaCl increased. No significant behavioral changes were observed in the activities of grazing and rumination. However, there was a noticeable change in the frequency of water consumption in the calves that ingested 90g/d of NaCl; they went more often to the trough and drank more water than the group that ingested only 15g sodium chloride/d. The osmolarity of ruminal liquid was higher in the group of calves fed 90g of NaCl/d. The pH, NH 3 concentration and number of rumen protozoa was within the normal range.INDEX TERMS: Cattle behavior, dairy calves, ruminal parameters, sodium intake.
Conclui-se que: a ausência do tratador aos domingos não afetou o peso vivo (72,3 vs 71,7 kg) e o ganho de peso médio diário (479 vs 451 g/animal/dia) aos seis meses de idade e o consumo médio de concentrado durante as dez primeiras semanas de vida (784 vs 732 g/animal/dia); a compensação na quantidade oferecida de leite resultou em animais mais pesados ao desaleitamento (63,0 vs 58,2 kg), mas não aos seis meses de idade (114,3 vs 113,8 kg).Palavras-chave: bezerros, gado de leite, manejo, quantidade de leite Effect of the Absence of Dairy Calves Management on Sundays on theirs Performance up to Six Months of AgeABSTRACT -Twenty-four Holstein x Zebu crossbred calves were used to compare the following experimental treatments: 1) calves management every day of the week, 2) absence of calves management on Sundays, with the compensation of the amount of milk fed (6 kg of whole milk given on Saturdays and on Mondays), and 3) absence of calves management on Sundays without the compensation of the amount of milk fed. Calves were fed 4 kg of whole milk/animal/day (except for treatment 2) up to 8 weeks of age when they were abruptly weaned. Starter was available to calves since the second week of age and limited to 2 kg/animal/day. It was concluded that: (a) the absence of calves management on Sundays did not affect body weight (72.3 vs 71.7 kg) and average daily weight gains (479 vs 451 g/animal/day) at six months of age, and average starter intake during the first ten weeks of age (784 vs 732 g/animal/day); (b) the compensation of the amount of milk fed resulted in heavier calves at weaning (63.0 vs 58.2 kg), but not at six month of age (114.3 vs 113.8 kg)Key Words: amount of milk, calves, dairy cattle, management R. Bras.
