Currently, most of the product designers have insufficient source in integrating the potential meanings when they are developing a new product. Also, it has become extremely challenging in verifying the variables of a product that could lead towards sustainable and successful products in the market. The development of a new product is not only to cater to the users’ satisfactions, but additionally, it should attract more users. In this paper, the Sustainable Product Design Method (SPDM) is introduced as a process to identify and verify the variables of the users’ emotional responses and perceived product quality, and element of sustainability in the early stage of the design process. The SPDM is a design guideline attempt to establish the sustainable product requirements (SPR) towards the sustainable and successful products. To prove the practicability of this method, one of the successful products was chosen as a case study. It has been found that the method built is valuable in facilitating the product designers in the early stage of product design and development process. The validation signified from this process is not only contributed towards product sustainability but also increase on its success in the market.
Universal Design is a fundamentals of good design. A product with Universal Design approach should provide wide range of solution for people with different purposes including those with diverse disabilities. However, designers often based on a subjective understanding of Universal Design Principles (UDP) to formulate design solutions. This result in the inaccurate conversion of design needs. A systematic approach is needed in order to develop a concept to meet the customer need. Previous studies shown potential integration of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) proposed to create a systematic approach for problem-solving requires creativity abilities. The purpose of this study is to explore the construction of the integration model of UDP and TRIZ 40 inventive principles. To construct the integration model of UDP and TRIZ 40 inventive principles, this study will use focus group discussion of certified TRIZ experts in the exploration of establishing an integration model of UDP and TRIZ 40 inventive principles. The further discussion onto the elements required to create the integration model by the TRIZ experts will be taken into consideration to construct a final model UDP-TRIZ model. Finally, the results are expected to lead towards a final integration model of the UDP and TRIZ integration model.
BackgroundThe technological intervention is considered as an adjunct to the conventional therapies applied in the rehabilitation session. In most high-income countries, technology has been widely used in assisting stroke survivors to undergo their treatments. However, technology use is still lacking in Southeast Asia, especially in middle- and low-income countries. This scoping review identifies and summarizes the technologies and related gaps available in Southeast Asia pertaining to stroke rehabilitation.MethodsThe JBI manual for evidence synthesis was used to conduct a scoping study. Until September 2021, an electronic search was performed using four databases (Medline, CINAHL, Scopus, ASEAN Citation Index). Only the studies that were carried out in Southeast Asia were chosen.ResultsForty-one articles were chosen in the final review from 6,873 articles found during the initial search. Most of the studies reported the implementation of technological intervention combined with conventional therapies in stroke rehabilitation. Advanced and simple technologies were found such as robotics, virtual reality, telerehabilitation, motion capture, assistive devices, and mobility training from Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The majority of the studies show that technological interventions can enhance the recovery period of stroke survivors. The consultation session suggested that the technological interventions should facilitate the needs of the survivors, caregivers, and practitioners during the rehabilitation.ConclusionsThe integration of technology into conventional therapies has shown a positive outcome and show significant improvement during stroke recovery. Future studies are recommended to investigate the potential of home-based technological intervention and lower extremities.
Visually impaired person has a difficulty in identifying the product function and usability. There is a need to integrate haptic exploratory procedure (HEP) of visually impaired person with universal design principle (UDP) in order to construct structural design approach. The purpose of this study is to construct theoretical framework for universal design approach considering haptic exploratory procedure (HEP). This study uses literature on visually impaired person haptic exploratory procedure (HEP) in order to identify the object properties translated by visually impaired person. Then, it uses literature of universal design to identify universal design approach in concept design process. Then, approach of TRIZ is explored in proposing systematic approach. Finally, the results are expected to lead towards model of theoretical framework of universal design approach using TRIZ and HEP. It can provide a helpful foundation for structuring the experiences to develop further the knowledge and understanding of objects for universal design. This theoretical framework contributes in designing structural UDP approach with consideration of visually impaired person HEP. It improves product usability in designing a universal design for visually impaired person.
Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with the deterioration of wayfinding abilities that resulted in significant needs of intensive supervision. The report examines the possible wayfinding intervention strategies aimed at assisting orientation deficit in AD patients, predominantly from the aspect of design and technological approaches. Method: Electronic databases; PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, SAGE journals, IEEE and Springer Link were used to find out possible literatures related to any intervention strategy or experimental study by means of design and technological approaches used to facilitate AD patients' wayfinding ability. Results: Nine relevant literatures were selected and categorized into three intervention groups; (a) virtual reality-based, (b) assistive technology (AT), and (c) environmental enhancement. They were reviewed based on demographic of participants, objectives, methodology and outcomes. The mentioned interventions reported positive results on assisting wayfinding of AD patients after the implementations. The use of appropriate design and technology towards the interventions such as, virtual environment for assessing navigational tasks, basic orientation technology and improvement architectural layout, were fruitfully explored. Conclusion: There is still a dearth of strong evidence on the associative effects between intervention group and its efficiency, due to the diversity of populations, interventions, comparators and outcomes. However, design and technology do necessarily contribute to the concept of interventions, as it resembles the fundamental approach. Alternative concept of interventions and design guideline based on the limitations and level of wayfinding deteriorations according to AD's severity should be further promoted.
