User knowledge has become a performance indicator that determines the success of a business. It provides a valuable source of information for product developer to develop the specification and characteristics of a new product. Various methods have been studied to extract and integrate the user knowledge during the early stage of a design process. This paper focuses the relation between the success of a product and the product specification. Interviews with product designers were conducted. The results of this study provide a foundation for product developers to specify the product characteristics. The strategies, information and knowledge for a structured approach to product characteristics can then be developed.
Currently, most of the product designers have insufficient source in integrating the potential meanings when they are developing a new product. Also, it has become extremely challenging in verifying the variables of a product that could lead towards sustainable and successful products in the market. The development of a new product is not only to cater to the users’ satisfactions, but additionally, it should attract more users. In this paper, the Sustainable Product Design Method (SPDM) is introduced as a process to identify and verify the variables of the users’ emotional responses and perceived product quality, and element of sustainability in the early stage of the design process. The SPDM is a design guideline attempt to establish the sustainable product requirements (SPR) towards the sustainable and successful products. To prove the practicability of this method, one of the successful products was chosen as a case study. It has been found that the method built is valuable in facilitating the product designers in the early stage of product design and development process. The validation signified from this process is not only contributed towards product sustainability but also increase on its success in the market.
This paper identifies a new distinction of ecodesign form, where it emerged from the literature case study that most practising designers have not conceived to interpret design research as an ecodesign identity. This research article objective reveals the ecological form creation in the semantics orders. The imaging product digitized an ecological form that was hermeneutically sourced by the literature review process using the heuristic method. It digitized the visual imagery before entering the prescriptive stage. The product imagery therefore digitized some ecodesign characteristics that the intangible ecological form conveyed in the form follows functional perspective; believing to environmentally-friendly product design. There is a significant amount of research and empirical investigations indicating that consideration of users’ requirements and preferences has become an important issue in product design. They are also important as a valuable source of facilitating the product designer in establishing the characteristics of a new product. The aim of this study is to establish the influence of users’ requirements and preferences that has resulted in the success of an automotive. A survey was conducted to identify the key characteristics factors for success of an automotive. Based on these findings, several recommendations are proposed for a product designer to develop the specifications for a new automotive.
One of the primary issues with many product design and development processes today is having a good balance between the elements of form and function. While all products must be able to perform their intended functions, considerations of aesthetic features are also necessary for them to be accepted as a good quality design. However, most available design and development processes of consumer products have been more focused on achieving the functional aspects and have tended to treat the aesthetic aspects as less crucial features. This approach has led to many failed functional products in the market, as their physical design lacks appealing factors to targeted users. To improve the situation, a new product design and development framework is proposed in this study to better facilitate designers or engineers in creating an all-rounded quality product design. This new method is developed based on the findings from a survey conducted among engineering students, who are future product design engineers, in order to identify and also resolve issues with the current methods that they typically apply for their design tasks. All in all, the new proposed method is fundamentally tailored to offer a structured guide for developing beautiful and useful products based on a semantic design approach.
Previous souvenir research has generally supported the use of heritage arts and crafts as a design inspiration, which both arouses visitors’ interest in the destination and enhances the local cultural identity. The increasing concern about souvenirs and cultural heritage has led to a proliferation of studies on this topic. However, few review articles discuss their inevitable connection and the process of transforming cultural heritage resources into souvenirs. Therefore, this review aims to analyze the literature on souvenirs related to cultural heritage from 2018 to July 2022. A criterion for inclusion and exclusion is presented to search and screen articles from three leading databases (i.e., WOS, Mendeley, and Scopus). Ultimately, 27 articles meeting the eligibility criteria were selected for synthesis analysis. ATLAS.ti 9, as the analysis software, yielded quantitative results showing trends in research on cultural heritage-related souvenirs. At the same time, from the qualitative analysis emerged four main themes about the topic: (1) significance of souvenirs, (2) customer’s purchase intention, (3) transformation, and (4) sustainability. Finally, the findings are expected to be beneficial in addressing the relationship between souvenirs and cultural heritage and provide insights for future research and practice of cultural product sustainability.
The purpose of this paper is to study user's involvement in new product development (NPD). It seeks to identify the factors involving user and design practices in the design process of new product development. A survey was conducted on 20 respondents consisting of designers involved in product development from various industries. The study focused on the early activities of the product design process which is called product specification. The analysis performed considers the importance of involving users in design decision. The outcome of this research is the significance of involving users and its effect on product development activities.The research also provides a model for an integrated user, designer and product knowledge activity in the product development process.
This study aims to expand upon the understanding of the multifaceted usability issues older adults encounter when using intelligent products. This was achieved by synthesizing extant research findings to come to an understanding of why usability issues still exist in intelligent products for older adults in China, even when appropriate design features are incorporated. This review was conducted by searching the literature on the Scopus, Springer, ScienceDirect, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases as well as Google Scholar using the terms “older adults in China”, “intelligent products”, and “usability.” Forty-three studies from between 2007 and 2022 were included in the review. The results reveal three salient aspects directly related to the usability issues of intelligent products experienced by older adults in China: (1) the usefulness of the product; (2) the ease of use of the product; and (3) the impact of the policy. The first two impact the effectiveness of the use of intelligent products, while the lack of policy intervention in the management system of intelligent products results in product clutter. This review provides insights for designers by proposing a conceptual framework for an intelligent product service platform for older adults, which will help researchers and research teams better understand the usability issues according to older adults’ feedback on intelligent products. We suggest a unified standard for intelligent product management in the future that is compatible across systems and reduces older adults’ learning stress.
