The biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P and water, the impacts of land use in the stocks and flows of these elements and how they can affect the structure and functioning of Caatinga were reviewed. About half of this biome is still covered by native secondary vegetation. Soils are deficient in nutrients, especially N and P. Average concentrations of total soil P and C in the top layer (0-20 cm) and 21 to 26 kg N ha -1 year -1 in mature and secondary Caatinga, respectively. The main processes responsible for nutrient and water losses are fire, soil erosion, runoff and harvest of crops and animal products. Projected climate changes in the future point to higher temperatures and rainfall decreases. In face of the high intrinsic variability, actions to increase sustainability should improve resilience and stability of the ecosystems. Land use systems based on perennial species, as opposed to annual species, may be more stable and resilient, thus more adequate to face future potential increases in climate variability. Long-term studies to investigate the potential of the native biodiversity or adapted exotic species to design sustainable land use systems should be encouraged.Keywords: tropical dry forest, nutrient fluxes, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus. Ciclagem biogeoquímica em ecossistemas terrestres do Bioma Caatinga ResumoOs ciclos biogeoquímicos de C, N, P e água, os impactos das mudanças do uso da terra nos estoques e fluxos destes elementos e como estas mudanças podem afetar a estrutura e o funcionamento da Caatinga foram revisados. Cerca da metade desse Bioma ainda é coberta por vegetação nativa secundária. Os solos são deficientes em nutrientes, principalmente N e P. A concentração média, na camada superficial (0-20 cm), de P total é 196 mg kg , e a biomassa radicular entre 3 a 12 Mg ha -1 . As produtividades e acumulações anuais de biomassa nos diferentes usos da terra variam de 1 a 7 Mg ha -1 . A fixação biológica de N 2 atmosférico é estimada em 3 a 11 kg N ha -1 ano -1 e 21 a 26 kg N ha -1 ano -1 em Caatinga madura e em regeneração, respectivamente. Os principais processos de perda de nutrientes e água são queimadas, erosão do solo, escoamento e colheita de cultivos e produtos animais. As mudanças climáticas projetadas indicam maiores temperaturas e menores precipitações. Considerando a alta variabilidade intrínseca, ações para aumentar a sustentabilidade deveriam melhorar a resiliência e a estabilidade dos ecossistemas. Sistemas de uso da terra baseados em espécies perenes, em contraposição a anuais, devem ser mais estáveis e resilientes, portanto mais adequados para enfrentar os potenciais aumentos na variabilidade climática. [1] While seasonally dry conditions are typical of large areas of the tropics, their biogeochemical responses to seasonal rainfall and soil carbon (C) sequestration potential are not well characterized. Seasonal moisture availability positively affects both productivity and soil respiration, resulting in a delicate balance between C deposition as litterfall and C loss through heterotrophic respiration. To understand how rainfall seasonality (i.e., duration of the wet season and rainfall distribution) affects this balance and to provide estimates of long-term C sequestration, we develop a minimal model linking the seasonal behavior of the ensemble soil moisture, plant productivity, related C inputs through litterfall, and soil C dynamics. A drought-deciduous caatinga ecosystem in northeastern Brazil is used as a case study to parameterize the model. When extended to different patterns of rainfall seasonality, the results indicate that for fixed annual rainfall, both plant productivity and soil C sequestration potential are largely, and nonlinearly, dependent on wet season duration. Moreover, total annual rainfall is a critical driver of this relationship, leading at times to distinct optima in both production and C storage. These theoretical predictions are discussed in the context of parameter uncertainties and possible changes in rainfall regimes in tropical dry ecosystems.

The Caatinga biome covers an area of 844,453km(2) and has enormous endemic biodiversity, with unique characteristics that make it an exclusive Brazilian biome. It falls within the earth's tropical zone and is one of the several important ecoregions of Brazil. This biome undergoes natural lengthy periods of drought that cause losses in crop and livestock productivity, having a severe impact on the population. Due to the vulnerability of this ecosystem to climate change, livestock has emerged as the main livelihood of the rural population, being the precursor of the replacement of native vegetation by grazing areas. This study aimed to measure GHG emissions from two different soil covers: native forest (Caatinga) and pasture in the municipality of São João, Pernambuco State, in the years 2013 and 2014. GHG measurements were taken by using static chamber techniques in both soil covers. According to a previous search, so far, this is the first study measuring GHG emissions using the static chamber in the Caatinga biome. N2O emissions ranged from -1.0 to 4.2mgm(-2)d(-1) and -1.22 to 3.4mgm(-2)d(-1) in the pasture and Caatinga, respectively, and they did not significantly differ from each other. Emissions were significantly higher during dry seasons. Carbon dioxide ranged from -1.1 to 14.1 and 1.2 to 15.8gm(-2)d(-1) in the pasture and Caatinga, respectively. CO2 emissions were higher in the Caatinga in 2013, and they were significantly influenced by soil temperature, showing an inverse relation. Methane emission ranged from 6.6 to 6.8 and -6.0 to 4.8mgm(-2)d(-1) in the pasture and Caatinga, respectively, and was significantly higher only in the Caatinga in the rainy season of 2014. Soil gas fluxes seemed to be influenced by climatic and edaphic conditions as well as by soil cover in the Caatinga biome.
