The results indicate a probable influence of age and anthropometric variables in muscular strength, as well as that of excess weight in flexibility limitation.
Objective: To determine the association between negative self-assessment of health status and sociodemographic variables and health indicators in elderly persons registered with the Family Health Strategy of Campina Grande, Paraíba. Methodolog y: A cross-sectional study with home-based primary data collection was carried out among elderly persons of both genders. The variables studied were: self-assessment of health, socioeconomic and demographic factors, number of referred chronic diseases and degree of dependence in basic activities of daily living. Possible factors associated with self-assessment of health were verified through multivariate logistic regression. Results: We evaluated 420 elderly persons (68.1% of whom were women) with an average age of 71.57 years. There was a positive association between negative self-assessment of health status and elderly persons with two or three chronic diseases (OR=2.70; CI95%:1.47-4.96), four or more chronic diseases (OR=4.35; CI95%:1,58-12.01), a mild degree of dependence (OR=2.34; CI95%:1.13-4.87), moderate dependence (OR=2.11; CI95%:1.07-4.17) and those who were married (OR=2.46; CI95%:1.01-6.01). Conclusion: The results show that the negative selfassessment of health status was associated with the number of referred chronic diseases and degree of dependence in basic activities of daily living. There was also a tendency towards association with married elderly persons. The results suggest the need for actions aimed at the prevention and diagnosis of chronic diseases, as well as the promotion and maintenance of functional capacity and disability prevention or treatment.
The objective of this study was to verify how the coping strategies, applied to health problems of the elderly, are related to the levels of Subjective Well-Being (SWB) in a cluster sample of 381 elderly people with an average age of 71.50 years (SD = 8.0), mostly female (73.4 %). The following instruments were used: Mini-Mental State Examination, Problem Coping Mode Scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule and demographic issues. The results indicated that, among all the coping strategies, the most used were the Religious Practices. The Focus on Problem explained positively and the Focus on Emotion explained negatively the SWB. Therefore, focus on the problem contributes positively to the psychosocial adaptation of the elderly to health problems.
Resumo AbstractThe main objective of this study has been to know if the relationship between stress and elderly quality of life can be moderated by the meaning in life. Two hundred and ten participants with mean age of seventy four years old, most of them female (68.58%) took part in the study. The participants answered the following instruments: Mini Mental State Exam, Stressing Events Inventory, Elderly Quality of Life Questionnaire, Purpose in Life Test (PIL) and demographic questions. Principal component analysis, Pearson correlation coeffi cients and linear regressions were analyzed. The results obtained indicated that the infl uence of stress on quality of life is signifi cant for the group with low meaning in life, but it was not the same for the group with high meaning in life. Thus, the meaning in life seems to have acted as a protective factor for the quality of life showing its moderating role with respect to stress. Keywords: Meaning in life, stress, quality of life, health, elderly.É notório o crescimento da população idosa no contexto brasileiro (Banco Internacional para a Reconstrução e o Desenvolvimento [BIRD], 2011), demandando maior conhecimento nas várias áreas do saber.
This study sought to compare evidence of the factorial validity of the adapted version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-OLD) scale (three response options) with the original version of the scale. We included two populations of individuals age 60 years or older from northeast Brazil. The majority of participants were women who had an elementary-level education. The first population comprised 335 elderly persons who completed the original version of the scale, and the second was composed by 265 elderly persons who completed the shortened scale. Results indicated better adjusting on the reduced scale and showed items with lower error probability in assessment of elderly persons with lower quality of life.
