Aim Habitat loss and fragmentation are considered the main drivers of species population declines and extinctions in the world. The large-scale replacement of natural habitats with human-modified habitats, such as the replacement of forests with agricultural and livestock farming areas, creates a scenario where natural habitat patches are immersed in an inhospitable land use matrix. We sought to evaluate how forest fragments (FFs) are influenced by the different surrounding landscape components, where we assessed how agricultural matrices that differ in structure and seasonality affect the structure of FFs and their amphibian assemblages.Location Atlantic Forest, Brazil. Methods Using diverse methods including satellite imagery, historical land use and field data, we evaluated the effects of representative agricultural matrices on the structure of FFs and their amphibian composition, species richness and abundance. Results Our results suggest that the structure of FFs and amphibian composition, species richness and individual abundance are intimately linked to the type of matrix and its proportion around FFs. The nature of the matrix is more likely to affect species richness, individual abundance and composition of amphibian assemblages than FF size, reducing the species-area relationship in FFs. There is strong support for the hypothesis that certain agricultural matrices facilitate FF exposure to the elements and a decrease in forest integrity within the fragment, which is reflected in a loss of strict forest inhabitants. Those matrices that allow for a greater exposure of FFs also appear to favour their occupation by habitat generalists.Main conclusions Surrounding matrices affect the structure and dynamics of forest remnants and should therefore be considered in management plans of severely fragmented landscapes. The influence of the land matrix should be urgently assessed, as it has effects on species occurrences and distribution. This is especially relevant considering the increasing deforestation rates in biodiversity hotspots world-wide.
Seeds of Rhizophora mangle L. were planted and comparatively assessed in six mangroves of Todos os Santos Bay, Bahia, Brazil. Five of the mangroves were on the north of the bay, an area under the in¯uence of oil activities: two areas around the Landulpho Alves Re®nery in Mataripe, and in Madre de Deus Island, Pati Island, and Fontes Island. The control site was a mangrove located on the south of the bay at Jiribatuba on Itaparica Island. In January and March, 1994, 1995 and 1998, sets of seeds were established and distributed in a pattern at regular intervals of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 m from one another. Every 3 months, the seedlings were assessed for ®xation, height, number of lateral branches, surface area and wet and dry weight of leaves. During 1998, ®ve individual seedlings were removed for biomass determination every 6 months. All variables were co-related with environmental conditions. After 12 months, a signi®cant growth pattern difference p , 0:05 was noted between seedlings from the mangrove around the re®nery and those from Jiribatuba, mainly related to the rates of ®xation higher than 50% and growth of leaves and precocious lateral branches to the two most impacted mangroves around the re®nery, and Madre de Deus and Pati Islands. This branching was not observed on the seedlings grown in the mangroves of Fontes Island and Jiribatuba. The construction of an ef¯uent emission channel into one of the mangrove area from the re®nery began in 1998. One hundred and twenty-®ve seedlings 1 yr in age and other young plants died following direct contact with these ef¯uents in February, 1999. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd on behalf of AEHMS.

Potential of aquifer contamination in the Gouveia stream basin, São Paulo AbstractIn the current scenario of increasing environmental awareness and seeking for methods to protect the environment, the preservation of both surface and underground water has gained prominence in the media and science. This research aimed to generate a chart of aquifers' contamination potential of the Gouveia stream basin, located in the municipality of Brotas, São Paulo, for the year 2017, based on multicriteria analysis and systematized by Fuzzy logic. The chart considered the relationship between the geological, geomorphological, pedological, and declivity processes with the local land -. Results showed that 96% of the basin area present medium, high or very high potential for contamination of aquifers, suggesting that the relationship between the natural dynamics of the physical environment and the current pattern of anthropic occupation is unfavorable to the maintenance of the quality of groundwater resources. The methodology applied can support territorial planning decisions and sustainable management of the Guarani aquifer system once it is possible to spatialize areas that need more conservation and others where the occupation would be more favourable. Keywords: Territorial Planning, Groundwater; Multicriteria Analysis, GIS.
