Neste artigo, apresentamos e refletimos sobre uma iniciativa que conduzimos junto a disciplinas obrigatórias de antropologia na qual oferecemos a alunas e alunos do Bacharelado em Ciências Sociais da Universidade de São Paulo oficinas de capacitação para leitura de textos antropológicos em língua inglesa. Com o amparo da premissa de que é necessário qualificar estudantes para leitura em idiomas estrangeiros, nesse texto, oferecemos, por um lado, um relato de uma experiência docente piloto e, por outro lado, procuramos contribuir para a reflexão sobre o papel da docência no letramento acadêmico de nossas e nossos estudantes.
O ano de 2016 custou a passar. Enquanto a nossa revista celebrava 25 anos de sua criação, o Brasil testemunhava um dos momentos mais dramáticos da história de sua jovem democracia. Em abril, assistíamos à votação do impeachment da primeira mulher a ocupar o mais alto cargo executivo do país, a presidenta Dilma Rousseff, na Câmara dos Deputados. Citações a torturadores dos tempos da ditadura, elogio ao Golpe de 1964, incontáveis menções à família e louvações a Deus como justificativas de voto tornavam evidente que o centro da peça jurídica, as chamadas "pedaladas fiscais", não estava entre os problemas mais graves da atual crise política. Dois dias depois, Michel Temer assumia a presidência interinamente, até que, em agosto, os senadores consumaram um processo de impeachment de questionável base jurídica e ele pôde, então, tornar--se o novo presidente da República.Entre uma reunião e outra, nós, editores da Cadernos de Campo, comentá-vamos a velocidade impressionante com que o atual governo empreendia um verdadeiro desmonte de direitos sociais, como os ameaçados pelas propostas da PEC 241/55 (a conhecida "PEC do fim do mundo", que restringe os investimentos em saúde e educação por vinte anos), as revisões de demarcações de terras indígenas e o enfraquecimento ou extinção de pastas ministeriais dedicadas às questões ambientais e sociais (Desenvolvimento Agrário, das Mulheres, da Igualdade Racial e dos Direitos Humanos, por exemplo). Mais do que as agitações políticas, assustava-nos todo um rearranjo dos parâmetros de justiça social reconhecidos -ainda que fragilmente -a partir de décadas de lutas populares e avanços duramente conquistados."Precisamos nos posicionar diante da atual conjuntura", falávamos em nossas reuniões quinzenais. Mas como? De tudo, restava-nos uma só certeza: a de que a revista Cadernos de Campo, o primeiro periódico discente dos programas de pós-graduação em antropologia do Brasil, não poderia se esquivar de tratar dos temas que a faziam pulsar, acadêmica e politicamente. O diálogo com o mundo fora dos muros da Academia se faz tão necessário quanto urgente. Questões indígenas, de raça, de gênero e sexualidade, entre muitas outras, passam por um momento de retrocessos antidemocráticos alarmantes. Retrocessos que, em alguns casos, cabe lembrar, já se faziam sentir durante o governo do Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT).
É crescente nos noticiários a quantidade de informações sobre os refugiados. As mídias cedem cada vez mais espaço àquilo que chamam, na Europa, de "crise migratória" e, no caso brasileiro, de "invasão de haitianos", posterior ao terremoto que devastou o país caribenho. Nas ruas de diversas metrópoles, do Brasil e do mundo, conhecidas por seu caráter cosmopolita, surgem outras línguas, cores, estampas e sabores, e frequentemente temos a impressão de nunca ter visto tantas culturas em um mesmo lugar. O tema tem se tornado objeto de reflexão não apenas na imprensa, mas também nos debates antropológicos. Embora os grandes deslocamentos e as diásporas, causados muitas vezes por motivos como a guerra, a fome ou a perseguição político-religiosa, não sejam assuntos tão novos para a disciplina, as características que vêm adquirindo nos últimos anos desdobram-se em novas problematizações e abordagens que justificam o espaço dedicado ao tema neste número da Cadernos de Campo.O que diferencia esses "novos" estrangeiros e suas demandas dos grandes deslocamentos ocorridos em outros momentos da história? Trata-se de um fenômeno realmente novo? Quando e por que passamos a designar como "refugiados" pessoas e populações em movimento? Essas questões permeiam os três artigos e o ensaio fotográfico que constituem o "Especial" desta edição. As abordagens parecem convergir em torno do fato de que "refugiado" é uma categoria em construção, que adquire sentidos outros além da acepção trazida pelo dicionário, não se encerrando tampouco nos vários estatutos nacionais e internacionais que tentam delimitá-la. O artigo de Helena Manfrinato mostra como uma visão orientalista, que dá ênfase a imagens como o "terrorismo islâmico" e a "opressão das mulheres", atravessa grande parte das narrativas sobre o refúgio de palestinos e sírios. A circulação da fotografia de uma criança síria que morreu afogada natentativa de travessia para a Europa, segundo a autora, tem o efeito de aprofundar a ideia de horror ligada ao refúgio. Ao mesmo tempo, a imagem consegue atingir círculos antes insensíveis à questão, bem como construir redes de apoio mais amplas,ainda que fundamentadas em um tipo de representação refutada pelos imigrantes. De modo similar, Ana Bersani questiona a recorrente descrição dos refugiados como pessoas "desesperadas", mostrando em seu artigo que os motivos para o deslocamento são, na verdade, variados, nem sempre se conformando ao imaginário e às narrativas do Ocidente.A imagem dos refugiados está, portanto, em permanente disputa e os textos que compõem a coletânea, assim como o vídeo que abre a seção, expõem seus processos de construção.
