ABSTRACT. An estuary is a transition zone between freshwater and marine ecosystems, resulting in dilution of seawater. Estuaries are also considered environments of intense biological activity related to the processes of nutrient cycling. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbial community composition along a salinity gradient in the estuary of the Cachoeira River, located in southern Bahia, Brazil. The analysis of bacterial and yeast communities was performed by determining the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis band richness. Formation of zones with similar profiles of bands was observed, and the increasing richness at the intermediate zone demonstrated a clear spatial distinction of communities depending DGGE for detection of bacterial and yeast communities on salinity. In addition, the dissolved oxygen content, temperature, pH, salinity, and dissolved inorganic nutrient contents (NH 3 + , NO 2 -, NO 3 -, PO 4 -) were determined. Nutrients were distributed in similar patterns, with decreasing concentrations as the salinity increases.
CROZARIOLLO NETO, V. S.; FREITAS, P. S. ORGANIC LOADING AND CATIONS RETENTION IN FILTERS OPERATING WITH SWINE WASTEWATER ABSTRACTPollutants removal from residual water can be done through physical, chemical and biological processes. Physical processes such as filtration can be used as a highly efficient alternative in removing suspended total solids. As filtering material for the treatment of residual water, sugarcane bagasse and Soil (Dystrophic Red Nitosol) were used. The filtering materials were characterized regarding each column density and its chemical composition. Filtration columns were constituted of 100 mm diameter and 1 m long PVC tubes. The material was placed in the columns until 0.90 m high suffering compression. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with eight treatments with two filtering materials and four different rates of swine wastewater (4.960, 9.930, 14.900 and 19.860 m 3 ha -1 ) and three replications per treatment. The filter composed of sugarcane bagasse showed good efficiency, 77,8% in Ca
ABSTRACT. Chemical alteration of industrial cassava plants effluent. The research was carried out in São Mateus, state of Espírito Santo,Brazil, aiming to analyze the variation of these parameters in the effluent of cassava industry, from the amount of samples statistically obtained between the output of the product until the final port. The method consisted of collecting every semester, one sample in the drought period (July) and another in the rainy period (January) in six different areas, the water taken from river São Mateus. For industrial purposes, E 1 S 1 class, was used as part of transforming the cassava into starch. Results showed that the parameters vary in several monitoring processes and within different stages of the given process. No disturbance for the ecological conditions has been observed since those compounds have been applied under biologically matured conditions.
ABSTRACT. Organic content variations in cassava industry effluent. This research was carried out in São Mateus, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, aiming to analyse the variation of elements or chemical compounds of industrial cassava effluents, concerning the period of sample collecting during monitoring and respective tests, running from industrial output to final store. The method consisted of semestral sample collecting during drought and rain seasons in six different spots adopting the São Mateus river water as test witness according to its industrial use and production of cassava starch. The parameters vary from spot to spot according to temperature, solar irradiation and collecting level, mainly related to organic compounds (Biochemical oxygen demand, Chemical oxygen demand and diluted oxygen), which may vary among different places within the same monitoring spot.
