The increased intensity with which emotions were perceived by patients with BD and MDD has important repercussions for patient functioning and clinical practice. A tendency to overestimate the intensity of certain facial expressions in mood disorders may lead patients to interpret social cues erroneously and engage in dysfunctional behaviors and cognitive patterns. Future studies should focus on this variable in addition to the accuracy of emotion identification.
Researchers have been investigating the ability of psychopaths and individuals with psychopathic traits to recognize emotions expressed through the face. The present study performed a systematic review using the main international databases of articles about this theme, published between 1975 and 2013. Seventeen articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria of this review. The results evidenced the use of non-converging methods and suggest that psychopathy is related to deficits in recognition of negative feelings. Confirmatory data can only be achieved through a methodological standardization. In future studies the use of distinct stimuli exposure time is suggested.
Recent studies have investigated the ability of adult psychopaths and children with psychopathy traits to identify specifi c facial expressions of emotion. Conclusive results have not yet been found regarding whether psychopathic traits are associated with a specifi c defi cit in the ability of identifying negative emotions such as fear and sadness. This study compared 20 adolescents with psychopathic traits and 21 adolescents without these traits in terms of their ability to recognize facial expressions of emotion using facial stimuli presented during 200 milliseconds, 500 milliseconds, and 1 second expositions. Analyses indicated signifi cant differences between the two groups' performances only for fear and when displayed for 200 ms. This fi nding is consistent with fi ndings from other studies in the fi eld and suggests that controlling the duration of exposure to affective stimuli in future studies may help to clarify the mechanisms underlying the facial affect recognition defi cits of individuals with psychopathic traits. Keywords: Psychopathic traits, facial expression, emotion, social cognition, psychopathy.
AbstractThis work aimed to adapt, apply and assess a cognitive-behavioral intervention model for boys who have been victims of sexual violence (SV). Three boys between eight and 16 years old who had been victims of SV were evaluated through psychological instruments before and after the intervention in terms of humor, anxiety and disruptive symptoms. Three independent judges analyzed reports of therapeutic sessions in order to evaluate the application of the adapted model through six indicators. Results showed variability in the number of symptoms for each boy. The evaluation indicated adequacy of two indicators (Therapeutic Alliance and Self-Disclosure), but the need of some readjustments in the adapted model. These fi ndings provide initial proof about the effectiveness of the adapted therapeutic model.
To date, research on infant face processing has focused on the appraisal of physical features, but investigations of the effects of sex and parental status on infant emotional expressions have been less prevalent. The present study sought to fill this gap by investigating the effects of sex and parental status on the assessment of infant emotional faces using a community sample of 105 participants (55 female) who were split into 2 groups according to parental status: 53 parents (28 female) comprised those who had a child aged <10 years, and 52 nonparents (27 female) comprised those who did not have children and did not work in a childcare environment. A total of 116 infant faces were presented under 5 emotional conditions (positive, muted positive, neutral, muted negative, and negative). The participants were instructed to rate each facial expression with regard to 3 aspects: pleasure, activation, and intensity. The results revealed a significant effect of group, with nonparents perceiving happy and sad infant faces as more intense than parents. We hypothesize that because parents are frequently exposed to intense emotions of their children, their range of intensity may be wider. Therefore, the parents tend to assign a lower intensity to infant emotional faces. In addition, no differences were found between men and women, regardless of parental status, in any of the aspects that were evaluated (pleasure, activation, and intensity) for any emotional expressions (sad, happy, and neutral). This corroborates findings that mothers and fathers are also often more similar than different in their cognitive responses to children.
