Remarks on the stability verification of longitudinal stiffened plates under biaxial compression. By using the Ritz method, the buckling of plates with longitudinal stiffeners exposed to biaxial compression is discussed. When limiting the deflection of the longitudinal stiffeners analogously to clause 9.2 of DIN EN 1993-1-5:2010 for transverse stiffeners, the buckling verification of the stiffened plate according to Eq. 10.5 of the code can be replaced by the verification of the relevant subpanel and the stability verification of the longitudinal stiffeners taking the additional stresses and deformation due to the compression in transverse direction into account. The example of the stability analysis of bottom chord of a box girder bridge during incremental launching shows that the verification against buckling according to Eq.10.5 of DIN EN 1993-1-5:2010 cannot replace the mentioned stability analysis of the longitudinal stiffeners. Using the example of the web of the box girder, it is shown that a design according to Eq. 10.5 may in some cases also lead to inefficient results.

Design and design review of the Heidingsfeld Viaduct. The Heidingsfeld Viaduct which is currently being replaced by a modern composite bridge is located south of the city of Würzburg. Due to the exposed situation of the bridge, well visible from the Würzburg City Centre, a design competition was held. The 635 m long single box girder with spans of up to 120 m is being built by the incrementally launching method. The roadway slab was cast on pre-fabricated panels at the cantilever areas and on the closed upper chord of the steel box. This construction method is characterized by a high torsional stiffness of the steel box during construction, low weight of the concrete slab and a short and therefore economic manufacturing process.
In common structural design, random variables, such as material strength or loads, are represented by fixed numbers defined in design codes. This is also referred to as deterministic design. Addressing the random character of these variables directly, the probabilistic design procedure allows the determination of the probability of exceeding a defined limit state. This probability is referred to as failure probability. From there, the structural reliability, representing the survival probability, can be determined. Structural reliability thus is a property of a structure or structural member, depending on the relevant limit states, failure modes and basic variables. This is the basis for the determination of partial safety factors which are, for sake of a simpler design, applied within deterministic design procedures. In addition to the basic variables in terms of material and loads, further basic variables representing the structural model have to be considered. These depend strongly on the experience of the design engineer and the level of detailing of the model. However, in the clear majority of cases [1] failure does not occur due to unexpectedly high or low values of loads or material strength. The most common reasons for failure are human errors in design and execution. This paper will provide practical examples of original designs affected by human error and will assess the impact on structural reliability.

It is common sense, that human error is the major cause for structural collapse [1]. Design review is the most effective way to rid human errors out of the design process and thus most societies have procedures for the design review installed. These systems work differently, e.g. preventive or repressive, and consequently affect the involved parties differently.

In this paper, the effect of different design review systems on the engineer as an individual will be assessed by addressing human factors that influence design decisions. The paper will focus on the structural design engineer, the effects on other included parties will be assessed in following studies.

The goal is to provide a better understanding of the impact of the design review procedure on the individual. Human factors affect the design engineer subconsciously and influence the decision- making in a significant way. Awareness of these factors and the corresponding influence due to the design review system will improve the design outcome and the relationship of design engineer and design review engineer.
