High‐energy X‐rays offer the large penetration depths that are often required for determination of bulk properties in engineering materials research. Photon energies of 150 keV and more are available at synchrotron sources, depending on storage ring and insertion device. In addition, synchrotron sources can offer very high intensities on the sample even at these energies. They can be used not only to obtain high spatial resolution using very small beams, but also high time resolution in combination with a fast detector. This opens up possibilities for a wide range of in situ experiments. Typical examples that are already widely used are heating or tensile testing in the beam. However, there are also more challenging in situ experiments in the field of engineering materials research like e.g. dilatometry, differential scanning calorimetry, or cutting. Nevertheless, there are a number of applications where neutron techniques are still favorable and both probes, photons and neutrons, should be regarded as complementary. A number of in situ experiments were realized at the GKSS synchrotron and neutron beamlines and selected examples are presented in the following.

Graph processing has become an important part of multiple areas of computer science, such as machine learning, computational sciences, medical applications, social network analysis, and many others. Numerous graphs such as web or social networks may contain up to trillions of edges. Often, these graphs are also dynamic (their structure changes over time) and have domain-specific rich data associated with vertices and edges. Graph database systems such as Neo4j enable storing, processing, and analyzing such large, evolving, and rich datasets. Due to the sheer size of such datasets, combined with the irregular nature of graph processing, these systems face unique design challenges. To facilitate the understanding of this emerging domain, we present the first survey and taxonomy of graph database systems. We focus on identifying and analyzing fundamental categories of these systems (e.g., triple stores, tuple stores, native graph database systems, or object-oriented systems), the associated graph models (e.g., RDF or Labeled Property Graph), data organization techniques (e.g., storing graph data in indexing structures or dividing data into records), and different aspects of data distribution and query execution (e.g., support for sharding and ACID). 45 graph database systems are presented and compared, including Neo4j, OrientDB, or Virtuoso. We outline graph database queries and relationships with associated domains (NoSQL stores, graph streaming, and dynamic graph algorithms). Finally, we describe research and engineering challenges to outline the future of graph databases.

As a result of the development of new materials for high temperature applications the potential for mass reduction and increased process temperatures is constantly being expanded. Intermetallic c-TiAl alloys can meet these demands to a large extent. The properties necessary for these applications have an adverse effect on the machinability however and render intermetallic titanium aluminides as difficult to machine materials. Cutting operations tend to produce damaged surfaces which are unsuitable for the intended applications. As the basis for a reliable and economic cutting technology, the chip formation of the intermetallic TiAl alloy TNBV5 has been examined in quasi-static cutting experiments. Observations showed that increased workpiece temperatures lead to a transition of the chip formation from segmented to continuous chips. By decreasing the undeformed chip thickness crack-free surfaces could be produced at low workpiece temperatures. In this case other mechanisms than the thermal activation of slip systems must be the reason for the observed large plastic deformations. The theory that hydrostatic pressure leads to this behavior is substantiated by the results of finite element simulations. This offers the possibility for damage free machining at lower cutting speeds, thus enabling the use of conventional tool materials at an acceptable tool life.

The strain and stress state in the chip formation zone determines the chip formation. However, it is difficult to obtain experimental data about the strain/stress fields during machining. For this reason, present chip formation models highly simplify the chip formation process. In order to extend the knowledge regarding the chip formation mechanisms, an experimental method for the in situ measurement of the elastic deformations within the chip formation zone during the cutting process has been developed. Using these deformations, the stress state can subsequently be calculated. The method is based on X-ray diffraction using high-energy synchrotron X-radiation during machining the workpiece in an orthogonal cutting process under quasistatic experimental conditions. The diffraction patterns are captured with a 2D detector. A comparison of the experimentally determined stresses at different measuring positions within the chip formation zone with results from a FEM cutting simulation shows a good qualitative and partially also quantitative consistency. Possibilities for the further performance increase of the method are identified so that the method can be used for the verification and extension of existing chip formation models in future
