The use of menthol as an anesthetic is effective, varying between the different size classes of Nile tilapia.
Efficacy of eugenol extracted from the plant Eugenia aromatica as an anesthetic for the biometry procedures in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) adults.Anesthetics represent a powerful tool in aquaculture, working to reduce stress and mortality commonly caused by handling. The objective this work was evaluate the effect of various concentrations of eugenol in adults of Nile tilapia and determine its optimal concentration for biometry procedures. Six concentrations (30, 60, 120, 180, 240 e 300 mg L -1 ) were tested. For each treatment, 12 fishes (average length: 32.7 ± 3.0; average weight: 557.0 ± 160 g) were individually immersed in anesthetic solution for 10 min. All stages of anesthesia were monitored during anesthetic induction, and upon profound anesthesia the opercular beat rate was monitored for the next minute. After anesthetic induction, the fishes were transferred to an aquarium containing water without anesthetic solution, and recovery time was measured. The 60 mg L concentration reached this stage more rapidly (77.8 seconds). Results suggest that the optimal concentration of eugenol for biometry procedures is 120 mg L -1 , and that increase anesthetic dosage results in reduced opercular beat rate.
SUMMARYThe efficiency of a recirculation system for the cultivation of C. auratus, fed with natural and artificial diets was evaluated. The experiment consisted of four treatments with four replicates. The first two treatments used recirculation system and the last two static system. In the first and fourth treatment, animals were fed with brine shrimp biomass (50% CP), while in the second and third treatments a commercial flake ration (42% CP) was used. At the end of cultivation (60 days), water samples were taken from all experimental units and subjected to standard plate count for determining the density of mesophilic bacteria. Final weight (g), final length (cm), specific growth rate (% day -1 ) and weight gain (%) were significantly different (p<0.05) among tested diets, but the culture systems did not affect fish performance. There was significant difference (p<0.05) between systems for total ammonia and nitrite. Animals fed with brine shrimp biomass acquired more intense and brighter colors than those fed only with commercial flake food. The values of standard plate count of mesophilic bacteria ranged from 7.0 × 10 3 to 1.1 × 10 4 CFU.ml -1 . In this study we observed that C. auratus is a species tolerant to adverse water conditions, perhaps with increased stock densities, the recirculation system could play some positive role on the zootechnical performance of cultured animals.
The adequate diet of Nile tilapia in their growth early stages is fundamental to the success of culture subsequent stages. The goal of the present work was to evaluate the Nile tilapia growth fed with different diets, and to morphometrically characterized the gastrointestinal tract of this species. The treatments consisted of three diets: (D 1 ) natural food, (D 2 ), commercial feed and (D 3 ) commercial feed + natural food. In the qualitative phytoplankton analysis, there was greater representation of the genus Chlorella, while zooplankton community analysis revealed greater number of Brachionus rotifer. Growth and survival in D 2 and D 3 did not reveal differences (p > 0.05), while in D 1 , the results were significantly lower (p < 0.05). The gastro-somatic and entero-somatic indices, and the intestinal quotient revealed higher values when only natural food was available. Nile tilapia reached best zootechnical performance when commercial feed was included in the diet. The intake of natural and/or artificial food is related to the growth and development of the gastrointestinal indices, emphasizing that these indicators can be altered by the type of feeding. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nutrient depletion during the cultivation of the microalgae Tetraselmis tetrathele, and to verify the algal growth and productivity in different culture media (Guillard f/2 and Conway). The experiment was conducted in nine-liter containers, with working volume of eight liters, salinity 35 ± 2‰, temperature 28 ± 1°C, with constant light and aeration, around 200 μE cm -2 s -1 and 3 L air min. -1 . Results showed that microalgae development caused nutrient depletion, since we observed an inversely proportional relationship between nitrate concentration and algal biomass during the cultivation. Regarding the culture media, a higher algal productivity was observed in the cultivation developed in Conway medium (p < 0.05), obtaining at the end of the cultivation, biomass of 3.38 ± 0.02 g L -1 . In the Guillard medium, only 2.47 ± 0.05 g L -1 was obtained. The cultivation in Conway medium presented better results concerning microalgae growth, with a more pronounced exponential phase. This was due to the higher nitrate availability, which was reduced more rapidly in the culture medium Guillard f/2.
