Além dos danos diretos causados pela doença, os grãos infectados podem ser tóxicos para o homem e animais devido à presença de micotoxinas especialmente o desoxinivalenol (DON) AbstractFusarium Head Blight or scab is an important disease mainly caused by Fusarium graminearum that occurs in Brazil and the world's wheatgrowing areas. Moreover, there are direct damages caused by this disease and the infected kernels may be toxic for humans and animals due to the presence of mycotoxins (e.g deoxynivalenol -DON). DON contamination was evaluated in a total of 100 wheat samples, and 50 were from national production (São Paulo, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul states) and 50 were imported (Argentina and Paraguay). The samples were collected during the period of May to December, 2005 from companies that normally commercialize or process wheat and are analyzed by a thin layer of chromatography. Ninety-four percent of national wheat samples and 88% of the imported samples were DON contaminated. The mean level of the national wheat samples (332 µg.kg -1 ) was higher than (p ≤ 0.05) imported wheat samples (90 µg.kg -1 ). Only 2 national wheat samples showed contamination higher than 1.250 µg.kg -1 , which is the maximum level established by European Community Regulation.
Increasing efforts to preserve environmental resources have included the development of more efficient technologies to produce energy from renewable sources such as plant biomass, notably through biofuels and cellulosic residues. The relevance of the soybean industry is due mostly to oil and protein production which, although interdependent, results from coordinated gene expression in primary metabolism. Concerning biomass and biodiesel, a comprehensive analysis of gene regulation associated with cell wall components (as polysaccharides and lignin) and fatty acid metabolism may be very useful for finding new strategies in soybean breeding for the expanding bioenergy industry. Searching the Genosoja transcriptional database for enzymes and proteins directly involved in cell wall, lignin and fatty acid metabolism provides gene expression datasets with frequency distribution and specific regulation that is shared among several cultivars and organs, and also in response to different biotic/abiotic stress treatments. These results may be useful as a starting point to depict the Genosoja database regarding gene expression directly associated with potential applications of soybean biomass and/or residues for bioenergy-producing technologies.
Clostridium perfringens is an anaerobic Grampositive bacterium known as common pathogen for humans RESUMO Clostridium perfringens é uma bactéria Gram positiva anaeróbica, conhecida por infectar os seres humanos, animais domésticos e de vida selvagem.
Clostridium perfringens is an important cause of enteric disease in humans and domestic animals. Ninety samples of bone and meat meal used in swine feed from Brazilian producers were evaluated about the presence of C.perfringens. The isolates were characterized by PCR for the presence of genes codifying the enterotoxin, alpha, beta, epsilon, iota and beta-2 toxins. From ninety samples evaluated by bacteriology 29 were positive (32.2%) to C. perfringens. PCR to phospholipase C gene revealed 77 positive samples (85.5%). Fifty-one C. perfringens strains isolated were submitted to PCR detection of toxin genes. All strains were positive to alpha and beta-2 toxin genes; 12 strains were positive to beta toxin gene and were classified as C. perfringens type C. The high number of meals samples positive to C. perfringens type C strains indicates the risk of meat and bone meal in maintaining the agent in swine herds and increasing the carcass contamination at slaughter.
