The number of species of frogs in the South American genus Adelophryne has increased in recent years, and it has become apparent that this group contains a substantial amount of undescribed diversity. Currently the genus contains nine described species and five candidate species. Here we describe the tenth species of the genus Adelophryne from the municipality of Igrapiúna, southern Bahia state, Brazil. The new species is characterized by its small body size, indistinct tympanum, and two phalanges in the finger IV. The species of the genus are distributed in three groups, Northern Amazonia Clade, Northern Atlantic Forest Clade and Southern Atlantic Forest Clade. The new species is phylogenetically related to species of the Northern Atlantic Forest Clade of Adelophryne and restricted to forested habitat, as typical for other Adelophryne. The species is restricted to the pristine forests in the type locality, and we consider its conservation status as Near Threatened. New morphological and molecular data of other Adelophryne species are presented, extending the distribution of Adelophryne sp. 2, Adelophryne sp. 4, Adelophryne mucronata and Adelophryne glandulata. However, a more comprehensive revision of the diversity and phylogenetic position of most Adelophryne species is needed, and the evolutionary relationships of A. meridionalis and A. pachydactyla remain unknown.

The region of Volta Grande do Xingu River, in the state of Pará, presents several kinds of land use ranging from extensive cattle farming to agroforestry, and deforestation. Currently, the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant affects the region. We present a checklist of amphibians and reptiles of the region and discuss information regarding the spatial distribution of the assemblies based on results of Environmental Programmes conducted in the area. We listed 109 amphibian (Anura, Caudata, and Gymnophiona) and 150 reptile (Squamata, Testudines, and Crocodylia) species. The regional species richness is still considered underestimated, considering the taxonomic uncertainty, complexity and cryptic diversity of various species, as observed in other regions of the Amazon biome. Efforts for scientific collection and studies related to integrative taxonomy are needed to elucidate uncertainties and increase levels of knowledge of the local diversity.Keywords: herpetofauna, monitoring, Amazonia, Belo Monte. Contribuições para o conhecimento de anfíbios e répteis da Volta Grande do Xingu, norte do Brasil ResumoA região da Volta Grande no Rio Xingu, localizada no estado do Pará, apresenta várias frentes de exploração que vão desde a criação animal até área de cultivo, resultando no desmatamento de fragmentos florestais. Atualmente a região está sendo impactada pela implantação da Usina Hidrelétrica de Belo Monte. A partir de dados obtidos através dos Programas de Monitoramento Ambiental realizados na área de influência da UHE Belo Monte, apresentamos uma listagem das espécies de anfíbios e répteis, com comentários sobre a distribuição espacial das assembleias. Foram catalogados 109 espécies de anfíbios (Anura, Caudata e Gymnophiona) e 150 de répteis (Squamata, Testudines e Crocodylia). Considerando as incertezas taxonômicas, a complexidade e a diversidade críptica de várias espécies, a riqueza regional ainda continua subestimada, assim como observado em outras regiões da Amazônia. Esforços direcionados ao aproveitamento científico e estudos que contemplem a taxonomia integrativa são necessários para elucidar as incertezas e aumentar o nível de conhecimento sobre a diversidade da região.Palavras-chave: herpetofauna, monitoramento, Amazônia, Belo Monte.

A new species of Pristimantis (Anura: Strabomantidae) from the Pristimantis conspicillatus group is described from theCerrado biome in central Brazil. Pristimantis ventrigranulosus sp. nov. is found in riparian forests associated with a par-ticular palm tree called “babaçú” (Attalea speciosa: Aracaceae) in northwestern Goiás state of Brazil. The new species isonly known from the type locality: Fazenda Macaúba (16°35’23” S; 51°47’43” W, approximately 400 m above sea level),Piranhas Municipality in the state of Goiás. The new species differs from the other species in the P. conspicillatus groupmainly by having, an homogeneously granular belly, Finger I > Finger II, dorsal skin coarsely shagreen, toe and fingerfringes weakly developed or absent, presence of basal webbing and tarsal fold, single nuptial pad on thumb, moderatelydeveloped and round discs on Fingers III and IV, and higher dominant frequency than other Pristimantis with similar calls(ranging 3451.8−4334.8 Hz). The new species shows an advertisement call equal in structure to the calls of P. dundeei, P. fenestratus, P. koehleri and P. vilarsi. Pristimantis dundeei is transferred to the P. conspicillatus group.

An inventory of the amphibians of the Reserva Ecológica Michelin – REM in southern Bahia, Brazil is presented. Sixty-nine species were recorded during a ten-year sampling period. Amphibians were distributed in two orders (Gymnophiona and Anura), belonging to twelve families [Aromobatidae (1), Bufonidae (3), Centrolenidae (1), Craugastoridae (5), Eleutherodactylidae (3), Hemiphractidae (2), Hylidae (34), Phyllomedusidae (5) Leptodactylidae (7), Microhylidae (4), Odontophrynidae (3) and Caeciliidae (1)]. Fifty per cent of the reproductive modes known for Atlantic forest anurans were recorded. While no threatened species were found at REM, six species are classified as data deficient (DD) by the Brazilian Red List of threatened species and deserve additional attention. Phasmahyla timbo and Vitreorana eurygnatha are listed as endangered in Bahia according to the list of threatened species of the state. Despite a higher diversity of amphibians in the Atlantic forest having been reported for mountainous regions, our results revealed that amphibian richness for lowland forests is also high.

Scinax strigilatus (Spix, 1824) is a member of the Scinax catharinae species group that inhabits forested streams in the Atlantic Rainforest of southern Bahia, northeastern Brazil. The loss of the holotype resulted in years of nomenclatural confusion solved with the designation of a neotype and the redescription of the species by Pimenta et al. (2007). Aiming to contribute to the taxonomic status and natural history of the species, we describe herein the advertisement call of Scinax strigilatus (Fig. 1A).
