Vacas 3/4CN apresentaram maior participação de costilhar na carcaça e menor de dianteiro que as 3/4NC.Palavras-chave: conformação, cortes comerciais, cruzamento, espessura de gordura subcutânea, peso e rendimento de carcaça Carcass Characteristics of Cull Cows from Different Genetic Groups Feedlot Finished and Slaughtered with Distinct WeightsABSTRACT -The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the carcass characteristics of crossbred cull cows, from the second (G2-3/4Charolais (C) Nellore (N) and 3/4NC) and third (G3 -5/8CN and 5/8NC) generations of Charolais -Nellore rotational crossbreeding, feedlot finished and slaughtered with 465, 507 and 566 kg. At the beginning of the experiment the average age, weight and body condition were, respectively, 8.5 years, 388.6 kg and 2.35 points. The diet, with 48:52 roughage:concentrate ratio, contained 12.5% crude protein and 2.99 Mcal of digestible energy per kg of dry matter. Cows slaughtered with 566 kg produced heavier carcasses (318.5 kg), higher dressing percentage (56.24%) and subcutaneous fat thickness (7.54 mm) than cows slaughtered with 465 kg (245.0 kg, 52.71% and 4.72 mm, respectively) or 507 kg (264.6 kg, 52.12% and 4.4 mm, respectively). The increase of slaughter weight (465, 507 and 566 kg) did not alter the sawcut percentage (51.17, 50.64 and 50.63%), reduced the forequarter (36.93, 37.26 and 35.23%) and increased the sidecut percentage (11.9, 12.09 and 14.14%), respectively. For the measurements related to the carcass muscular expression, conformation was improved by slaughter weight increase (8.13, 9.47 and 10.9 points), respectively. Cushion thickness increased signi...
-The objective of this study was to evaluate animal performance and carcass characteristics of 64 Nellore young bulls at 22 months of age finished in a feedlot and slaughtered at five body weights (350; 455; 485; 555 and 580 kg) fed diets containing coated or uncoated urea. The experimental design adopted was completely randomized, set in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, and for the variables assessed in the control animals, it was 5 × 2. No effect of interaction between slaughter weights and diets were observed, so the variables were analyzed separately, compared by polynomial contrasts and by the F test, respectively. The time animals remained in the feedlot to reach slaughter weights was 66, 88, 145 and 194 days. Average daily gain (ADG) showed quadratic behavior, with a maximum of 1.44 kg/day with animals of 491.7 kg. Dry matter intake (DMI) (kg/day) was similar in all the treatments, but it decreased linearly as body weight increased. The bionutritional efficiency worsened linearly as body weight rose. The elevation in slaughter weight resulted in linear decrease in the percentage of beef round and increase in forequarter. Backfat thickness and rib eye area of the longissimus increased linearly and the percentages of muscle and protein in the carcass reduced and those of fat and ether extract increased linearly as body weight increased. Average daily gain, DMI, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics were not affected by diets containing coated or uncoated urea. However, animals fed coated urea presenter better crude fiber and neutral detergent fiber intake.
Palavras-chave: bovinos de corte, cruzamento, estômago, fêmeas, fígado Vital organs and gastrointestinal tract of feedlot finished Charolais x Nellore culling crossbred cows slaughtered at different weights ABSTRACT -The objective of this experiment was to study the development of vital organs and gastrointestinal tract of culling crossbred cows from the second (G2: 3/4Charolais (C) Nellore (N) and 3/4NC) and third (G3: 5/8CN and 5/8NC) generations of C x N rotational crossbreeding. Animals were feedlot finished and slaughtered with 465 (T465), 507 (T507), and 566 kg (T566) of body weight (BW). At the beginning of the trial, age, BW, and body condition averaged respectively, 8.5 years, 388.6 kg and, 2.35 points. Animals were fed a 48:52 forage:concentrate ratio diet containing 12.5% crude protein and 2.99 Mcal of digestible energy per kg of dry matter. Liver showed the greatest development among the studied organs. Lungs and spleen showed high development until animals reached 507 kg BW (T507) but reduced at 566 kg BW (T566). Increasing slaughter weight reduced the proportion of internal organs and gastrointestinal tract in the total BW and empty body weight (EBW). G3 animals had heavier reticulum-rumen and stomach (reticulum-rumen+omasum+abomasum) (14.29 vs. 12.30 kg and 24.43 vs. 22.28 kg, respectively) compared to G2 cows. However, when expressed as proportion of BW and EBW only the reticulum-rumen weight differed between G2 and G3 cows. The greater contribution of C in the genotype resulted in increased volume of blood and development of lungs and all vital organs together when expressed as proportions of EBW.Key Words: beef cattle, cows,...
Palavras-chave: categoria animal, consumo de alimento, manejo da alimentação, mastigações, ócio, ruminação Effects of supply frequency of roughage and concentrate on ingestive behavior of feedlot cows and heifersABSTRACT -The present study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the influence of frequency of roughage and supplement supply and/or animal category on the ingestive behavior of cattle. Sixteen heifers and sixteen cows, with average initial age of 20 and 66 months and average initial weight of 338 and 432 kg, respectively, were used.Treatments were represented by the frequencies of roughage and concentrate supply: 2 R/C -roughage and concentrate two times per day; 1 R/C -roughage and concentrate one time per day; 1 R/2C -roughage one time per day and concentrate two times per day; 1 R/3 C -roughage one time per day and concentrate three times per day, offered to cows and heifers.Diet was composed of 60% maize silage and 40% concentrate, on a dry matter basis (DM). The complete randomized experimental design was used, with a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement (frequencies × category). The data were submitted to variance analysis and averages were compared by "t" test. The interaction between supply frequencies and animal category was significant for rumination and idle times, efficiencies o...
This study evaluated the nutritional interrelationship between the growing and finishing phases of crossbred cattle in determining their performance. One hundred and eight animals were used (8 months old, body weight [BW] 211 ± 20 kg). During the dry season, the animals received one of the following supplements: a mineral plus urea supplement (ad libitum, MSD), a protein supplement (1 g/kg BW per day, PR1), or a protein-energy supplement (5 g/kg BW per day, PE). During the rainy season, the animals received one of the following supplements: a mineral without urea supplement (ad libitum, MSR), a protein supplement (1 g/kg BW per day, PR2), or PE (5 g/kg BW per day). The experimental design was completely randomized using a 3 × 3 factorial scheme (for the rainy season) and a 3 × 3 × 2 factorial scheme (for the finishing phase). The supplementation and finishing systems were considered to be the treatments, and the animals were considered to be the experimental units. Dry season supplementation did not affect the average daily gain (ADG) during the rainy season (P = 0.12) or the finishing phase (P = 0.73). An increase in the level of rainy season supplementation reduced ADG by 12% during the finishing phase (P < 0.06). Providing PE during the dry and rainy seasons led to the animals being slaughtered 17 (P = 0.06) and 30 (P < 0.01) days earlier, respectively. Our results indicate that supplementation during the dry season (under poor-quality pasture conditions) does not affect the performance during the rainy season or the finishing phase. Furthermore, while providing PE during the rainy season can reduce ADG during finishing, the higher BW at the beginning of the finishing phase is sufficient to reduce the time of the finishing period.
