O caupi (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) é um alimento básico das populações do Nordeste brasileiro, devendo merecer atenção com vistas a melhoria da qualidade de grãos, resistência a doenças e pragas e aumento de produtividade. Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a variabilidade e o potencial genético de 28 linhagens, escolhidas após uma seleção para cor, tamanho de grãos e resistência a viroses. A produtividade apresentou coeficiente de variação genético de 23,90%, e o valor agronômico, de 3,56%. O número de vagens por pedúnculo apresentou a menor estimativa do coeficiente de determinação genético (4,51%), e o peso de 100 grãos, a maior (81,74%). O coeficiente de determinação genético da produtividade foi de 34,15%. As maiores estimativas de ganho genético foram as do peso de 100 grãos (21,73%) e da produtividade (19,77%). As correlações genotípicas foram superiores às fenotípicas e às de ambiente, destacando-se as correlações entre número de ramos secundários e produtividade (68,13%), e valor agronômico e produtividade (100%). Estes resultados mostram amplas possibilidades de seleção entre as linhagens com relação à maioria dos caracteres estudados.

Neotropical Entomology 31(2): 217-224 (2002) Análise das Deformações Relativas no Estudo da Variação Morfológica na Cápsula Genital deTrichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) RESUMO ABSTRACT -The influence of the host on the morphology of the male genital capsule of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley was studied by geometric morphometric analysis. Specimens of the parasitoid obtained from 10 different Lepidoptera host species were used. Initially, landmarks were defined and Cartesian coordinates (x and y) for each landmark of the genital capsule of all specimens were obtained. The anatomic landmarks transformed to Cartesian coordinates were then analyzed by generalized orthogonal least-square procedure. Consensus configuration of the genital capsule for all specimens was obtained and partial and relative warps were determined. Fifteen landmarks generated 24 relative warps for each specimen. The ordination of the relative warps ( = 0), using shape components, separated T. pretiosum into four different hosts groups: (1 -Alabama argillacea (Hueb.), Helicoverpa zea (Bod.) and Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.); 2 -Danaus plexippus erippus (Cramer), Hamadryas feronia (Linn.) and Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith); 3 -Anticarsia gemmatalis Hueb., Bonagota cranaodes Meirick and Diaphania sp. and 4 -Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller). The two first axes of the relative warps explained 83.0% of the total variation of the genital capsule shape of the specimens. The main difference was at the anterior region of the posterior extension of the dorsal lamina of the genital capsule. Although results obtained were initial and exploratory they have demonstrated that subtle shape differences in the male genital capsule can be detected by geometric morphometric analysis.

The coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Prostigmata: Eriophyidae), is a major pest in several coconut production areas worldwide. Information on region of origin and sources of recent introductions of this mite are important aspects to guide evaluation of biological control agents and adoption of quarantine measures. Studies on the geographic pattern of morphological variation among populations of the coconut mite from different countries and continents can provide some of the biogeographic information required. Geometric morphometric analyses allow us to quantify and visualize shape variation, eliminating the effect of size, position and orientation, within and among samples of organisms. The objective of this study was to investigate the morphological variation of the prodorsal shield, coxigenital and ventral regions of the A. guerreronis idiosoma throughout its distribution in America, Africa and Asia, using Relative Warp Analysis (thin-plate splines function) and to attempt to relate this variation to the area of geographic origin from among the studied populations. Variation in the configurations of prodorsal shield, coxigenital and ventral regions were observed. For the last two body regions, this variation was related to the origin of populations. Considerable morphometric variability was observed between American populations, which in turn were distinct from the African and Asian populations. The latter were morphologically similar. These results support previous indications that A. guerreronis is of American origin and that it was introduced to Asia from Africa, or from the same source as that of the African populations. Some considerations on the use of the geometric morphometric analyses in taxonomic studies of eriophyoid mites are presented.

-The population of Hemiptera Auchenorrhyncha was studied in sweet citrus groves (Citrus sinensis), coffee plantations (Coffea arabica) and a semi-deciduous seasonal forest with shrub physiognomy in Bebedouro, SP, to evaluate the infl uence of the natural ecosystem on the species composition of the agroecosystems. Monitoring was carried out by using yellow stick cards, which were replaced every 15 days and all Auchenorrhyncha collected were counted and identifi ed. Seven families, 11 subfamilies and 98 species were collected, with Cicadellidae being the most abundant. The native forest presented larger wealth, diversity and equitability of Auchenorrhyncha species, demonstrating to be more stable than the other habitats. The high values of similarities obtained between the agroecosystems and the forest demonstrated that great part of Auchenorrhyncha species occurring in the agricultural habitats was also occurring at the forest, indicating that the last may serve as reservoir of species. The abundance of the taxonomic groups of Auchenorrhyncha collected varied with the evaluated habitats, with Proconiini being the most abundant in the coffee plantation next to the forest, Athysanini, Scaphytopiini, Neocoelidiinae and Coelidiinae in the orange orchard and coffee plantation distant from the forest; Cicadellinae and Agalliinae were not related to any of the habitats. The presence of vector insects and possible vectors of plant diseases in the appraised habitats indicate the need of the implementation of strategies for landscape management.KEY WORDS: Species monitoring, Cicadellidae, natural system, agricultural ecosystem RESUMO -A população de Hemiptera Auchenorrhyncha foi estudada em pomares de laranja doce (Citrus sinensis), cafezais (Coffea arabica) e fl oresta estacional semidecidual com fi sionomia arbustiva, em Bebedouro (SP), com o objetivo de avaliar a infl uencia do ecossistema natural na composição de espécies do agroecossistemas. O monitoramento foi feito com cartões adesivos amarelos, os quais foram trocados a cada 15 dias, efetuando-se a contagem e identifi cação dos Auchenorrhyncha coletados. Capturou-se o total de sete famílias, 11 subfamílias e 98 espécies, sendo Cicadellidae o grupo mais abundante. A fl oresta nativa apresentou a maior riqueza, diversidade e equitabilidade de espécies de Auchenorrhyncha, demonstrando ser mais estável que os demais habitats. Os altos valores de similaridades obtidos entre os agroecossistemas e a fl oresta demonstram que grande parte das espécies de cigarrinhas que está ocorrendo nos habitats agrícolas também está ocorrendo na fl oresta, indicando que esta pode estar funcionando como reservatório de espécies. A abundância de grupos taxonômicos de Auchenorrhyncha coletados variou nos habitats avaliados, sendo Proconiini o mais abundante no cafezal próximo à fl oresta, Athysanini, Scaphytopiini, Neocoelidiinae e Coelidiinae no pomar de laranja e cafezal distante da fl oresta; Cicadellinae e Agalliinae não se relacionaram a nenhum dos habitats.
