Neotropical Entomology 33(3): 271-281 (2004) Trichogramma no Brasil: Viabilidade de Uso Após Vinte Anos de Pesquisa RESUMO -São apresentados os resultados dos estudos com Trichogramma no Brasil, especialmente aqueles desenvolvidos na ESALQ/USP, nas últimas duas décadas . O projeto, envolvendo desde a taxonomia, técnicas de criação, aspectos biológicos e comportamentais das pragas e dos parasitóides, dinâmica populacional das pragas, técnicas de liberação,estudos de seletividade, avaliação da eficiência, pode ser considerado um modelo e foi seguido por outros programas de controle biológico no Brasil e na América Latina. O programa gerou inúmeras publicações, permitindo a formação de recursos humanos na área, abrindo novas áreas de pesquisa e mostrando que o parasitóide pode ser usado no controle de pragas-chave do algodoeiro, cana-de-açúcar, grãos armazenados, hortaliças, milho, soja e tomateiro. As perspectivas do uso do parasitóides possibilitaram a criação de empresas para comercializá-los no Brasil, transferindo mais facilmente a tecnologia ao usuário. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Trichogrammatidae, parasitóide de ovos, controle biológico aplicado ABSTRACT -Results of studies with Trichogramma in Brazil are presented, especially those developed at ESALQ/USP in the past two decades . The project involved taxonomy, rearing techniques, biological and behavioral aspects of the pests and parasitoids, pest population dynamics, release techniques, selectivity studies, and efficiency evaluation. It can be considered a model project and has been adopted by other biological control programs in Brazil and Latin America. The program has given rise to a number of publications, allowing the formation of human resources in this area and opening new research areas. The results indicated that the parasitoid can be used to control key pests in cotton, sugarcane, stored grain, vegetables, corn, soybean, and tomato. The perspective of using the parasitoid has stimulated the creation of companies to commercialize it in Brazil, thus more easily transferring this technology to users.

RESUMO:Com o objetivo de avaliar o impacto ambiental ocorrido na área experimental do Departamento de Entomologia -ESALQ/USP, num período de 25 anos, aplicou-se a análise faunística aos resultados da coleta de insetos, com armadilha luminosa, em 1965/66 e 1990/91. Comparando-se os índices fisiográficos das épocas estudadas, verifica-se uma redução de 35,1% entre 1965/66 e 1990/91. Como conseqüência, o índice de diversidade também diminuiu em 60,3% nas datas estudadas, em decorrência da menor coleta de insetos, caracterizando considerável impacto ambiental. Descritores: índices faunísticos, armadilha luminosa, ambiente FAUNISTIC INSECT ANALYSIS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE EVALUATIONABSTRACT: Environmental changes at the experimental area of the Department of Entomology, University of São Paulo, in Piracicaba, in a period of 25 years, were evaluated using a faunistc insect analysis of samples collected by light traps in 1965/66 and 1990/91. A reduction of 35.1% in the faunistic index between these two periods was recorded. Consequently, the diversity index also decreased by 60.3% due to the low number of insects collected. These indices suggest a considerable environmental change in the experimental area over this 25 years period.

-The distribution of females of Anastrepha species per trap was strongly clustered, with five traps (6%) capturing 50% of the total of females. Only Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.) and A. obliqua (Macquart) were dominant species. A. fraterculus was by far the most frequent species (80.2% of the females), and the most constant, occurring in 98.0% of the samples. In decreasing order of frequency, A. obliqua (12.6%), A. pseudoparallela (Loew) (3.1%), and A. bistrigata Bezzi (2.1%) comprised the other major species. The remaining species showed frequency lower than 1%. An integrative multidisciplinary approach was used to delimit boundaries among cryptic species within the Anastrepha fraterculus complex in Brazil. Sexual compatibility, courtship and sexual acoustic behaviour, female morphometric variability, variation for the mitochondrial gene COI, and the presence of Wolbachia were compared among A. fraterculus populations from the Southern (Vacaria, Pelotas, Bento Gonçalves, São Joaquim) and Southeastern (Piracicaba) regions of Brazil. Our results suggest full mating compatibility among A. fraterculus populations from the Southern region and partial pre‐zygotic reproductive isolation of these populations when compared with the population from the Southeastern region. A. fraterculus populations from both regions differed in the frequency of courtship displays and aspects of the calling phase and mounting acoustic signal. Morphometric analysis showed differences between Southern region and Southeastern region samples. All populations analyzed were infected with Wolbachia. The trees generated from the COI sequencing data are broadly congruent with the behavioural and morphometric data with the exception of one Southern population. The likely mechanisms by which A. fraterculus populations might have diverged are discussed in detail based on behavioural, morphometric, molecular genetics, and biogeographical studies.
