One hundred and twenty patients with a mean age of 38 years (range 12-85 years; M 91, F 37) were studied over a period of 5 years in a teaching hospital in Dhaka. Sixty-two patients presented with probable anuria with 1-4 days' duration, 63 patients presented with oliguria, and 3 were nonoliguric. The causes of acute renal failure were medical (94), surgical (22), obstetrical (13). Of the medical cases, the causes were gastroenteritis in 42 cases, gastroenteritis with CNS involvement in 11 cases, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis in 10 cases, acute viral hepatitis in 8 cases, and septicemia in 8 cases. Of 22 surgical cases, postoperative acute renal failure was the cause in 9, road traffic accident in 6, and renal calculus disease in 7. There were 13 cases in the obstetrics group, of whom 9 were due to abortion, 2 were due to preeclampsia, and the other 2 were postoperative. The mean blood urea of all cases was 35 mmol/L and serum creatinine was 988 mumol/L. Dialysis was required in 105 cases; of these, 72 were medical cases, 21 were surgical cases, and 12 were obstetric cases. The overall survival rate was 75%. The improved survival is probably due to timely referral and prompt medical management.

Mental illness is a neglected issue all over the world. The development of negligence towards mental illness could be due to the stigmatized attitudes. Also, social stigma due to mental illness is prevalent in many south Asian countries. In Bangladesh, the condition is even worse than regional data in Asia. The general people consider media as a primary source of information about mental health. However, mental health professionals (MHP) have direct contact with psychiatric patients and their family members. Therefore, both MHP and media professionals (MP) have a role in reducing social stigma due to mental illness. The present study aimed to identify attitudes of MHP and MP towards each other in reducing social stigma due to mental illness. We conducted a cross‐sectional online survey among 174 participants (80 MHP and 94 MP). We used two sets of self‐reporting questionnaires to assess the attitudes of MHP and MP towards one another. Also, we collected and analyzed sociodemographic profiles of study participants. We observed significant differences in terms of their profession‐related statements between MHP and MP. Also, we have seen significant gaps between MHP and MP in terms of their complete agreement on attitude‐related aspects. However, most respondents agreed that stigma due to mental illness is a vital problem in Bangladesh. Moreover, maximum participants accepted that the current public images about psychiatry and media role in reducing social stigma need to be improved. We observed gap between MHP and MP in their roles and beliefs in reducing social stigma due to mental illness in Bangladesh. Reciprocal training and awareness programs would help them in reducing social stigma due to mental illness. The findings of the present study would help to sort out the possible areas for interventions. However, the present study has few limitations; therefore, we recommend further studies with more homogeneous and large samples to make better conclusion.

Background: Live related kidney transplantation is the most preferred form of renal replacement therapy worldwide including Bangladesh. However, it is challenging and also rewarding both for patients and treating physicians. BSMMU hospital has given maximum effort for its greater success. The aim of this study was to share our ten years’ experience regarding some aspects of live related renal transplantation. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in nephrology department of BSMMU hospital from January 2002 to December 2015. Data were collected from hospital records and some previously conducted study on these transplant recipients. Results: A total of 360 live related kidney transplant recipients were evaluated during this period. Recipients Male: Female ratio was 1.57:1. Mean age of recipients were 39.58 ± 10.46 years. The causes of ESRD were chronic glomerulonephritis 220(61.60 %), diabetic nephropathy 58(16.24%), hypertensive nephrosclerosis 22 (6.16 %), chronic interstitial nephritis 11 (3.08 %), SLE 10(2.8%), ADPKD 6(1.68 %), unknown 19(5.32 %). Most of the donors were mother (21.84% %) followed by spouse mostly wife (20.44%) and sister (18.76 %). Almost all recipients were on MHD 352(97.78%), 2 were on CAPD and 06 were pre-emptive transplantation. Triple immunosuppressive protocol Cyclosporine or Tacrolimus, MPA or Azathioprine and Prednisolone were used in each patient. Recipients with poor HLA matching received Baciliximab in standard dose. CMV prophylaxis was given in selected patients and each patient received pneumocystis jirovecii prophylaxis. Common complications during post-operative period were ATN 41(11.48%), DGF 23(6.44%), Acute rejection 50(14%) and infection mainly urinary tract infection 46(12.88%) and RTI 14(3.92) followed by wound infection and other surgical complication. Presence of BK virus infection was studied in 29 transplant recipient and it was found to be positive in 6(20.7%) cases. Protocol biopsy was done in 37 transplant recipient in the 2008-2009 on day 14, and day 90 to see subclinical rejection and early graft dysfunction. On day 14th biopsy report showed 21(56.7%) normal histology, 5(13.5%) had subclinical rejection, 5(13.5%) had clinical rejection, 4(10.8 %) developed ATN, 2(5.2 % ) cyclosporine toxicity, and report at 3 month showed normal histology 18(48.60%), subclinical rejection 7(18.90%), clinical rejection 5(10.80%). Leading cause of chronic allograft dysfunction was chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) 60(19.80%) followed by chronic cyclosporine toxicity 37(12.21%) and de-novo or recurrent glomerulonephritis. Mean post-transplant hospital stay was 18.46 ± 5.56 days. Mean duration of normalization of serum creatinine after surgery was 7.38 ± 3.88 days. At discharge 74.40% patients had normal renal function with mean serum creatinine 1.10 ± 0.26 mg/dl and 21.34% patients showed gradual improvement of renal function with mean serum creatinine 2.12 ± 0.97 mg/dl. In our study 1 year and 5 years’ graft survival was 93.88% and 75.16% respectively and 1 year and 5 years’ patient’s survival was 346(96.08%) and 290(81.2%). Conclusion: Our report shows that short and long term graft and patient survival is encouraging and comparable to other centers of both developing and some developed countries with limited resources and facilities.

Introduction: Consultation-liaison Psychiatry (CLP) is the study, practice and teaching of the relationbetween medical and psychiatric disorders. Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to find out the referring department, reason for consultation,common psychiatric comorbidities and sociodemographic of the referred patients to psychiatrydepartment from the other departments of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University of Dhaka. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was carried out from May 2018 to February 2020. Patientsreferred from different inpatient departments every Thursday were taken as study population.Psychiatric diagnoses of the patients were assigned by the consultant psychiatrist as per DSM-5criteria. Semi structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic data. Results: Among the referred patients (n= 89) 56% were female; 63% were aged between 19-59years; 65% were married; 58% were from urban background and 51% studied up to higher secondary.More than half of the patients were referred from different branches of Medicine (68%). Referral fromInternal Medicine was 14.6%, Rheumatology 13.5%, Neurology and Nephrology 10% respectively.The rest were from the branches of pediatrics, surgery and gynecology. Most common psychiatricdisorder was Major Depressive Disorder (37%) followed by Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (17%)and Delirium (10.11%). 15% patient received no psychiatric diagnosis. Conclusion: Psychiatric comorbidities in general medical illness are very common. CLP provides anopportunity to improve health outcomes for inpatients and reduce burden on the healthcare system. Background: Hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is common among patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). This study was undertaken to observe prevalence of hepatitis B and C infection in hemodialysis patients, their family members and dialysis staffs.
