Abstract:The copper (I)-catalyzed direct synthesis of imines from amines under mild aerobic conditions is described. The method is applicable for the synthesis of various imines from corresponding amines such as benzylic, aliphatic, cyclic secondary, heteroaromatic species and the oxidative condensation of benzylamines with anilines extends the scope of the CuCl catalytic system. Noteworthy, solvent-free procedure, air as a benign oxidant, and the cheap and easy availability of the catalyst are the vital advantages of the method.

This Focus Review describes different methods that have been reported for the synthesis of imines. It is organized according to the methods used for imine synthesis starting with metal catalysis, including Ru, Au, V, Cu, Mn, Co and Pd catalysis. Other methods, such as photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, organocatalysis, and so on, are also emphasized. Ample information on the condensation of carbonyl compounds/alcohols with amines and direct oxidation of amines to give imines is discussed. Furthermore, among various metal‐catalyzed reactions, specific attention has been paid to copper‐catalyzed imine synthesis, as copper is less toxic than other heavy metals, comparatively inexpensive, and is easily accessible.

In the current study, we examined whether subchronic exposure via drinking water to low doses of a mixture of metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, chromium, manganese, iron, and nickel), found as contaminants in various water sources of India, and to concentrations equivalent to WHO maximum permissible limits (MPL) in drinking water for individual metals, can alter systemic physiology of male rats. Data on water contamination with metals in India were collected from the literature and metals were selected on the basis of their frequency of occurrence and contamination level above MPL. Male Wistar rats were exposed to the mixture at 0, 1, 10, and 100 times the mode concentrations (the most frequently occurring concentration) of the individual metals via drinking water for 90 days. One more group of rats was exposed to the mixture at a concentration equivalent to the MPL (WHO) in drinking water for individual metals. Toxic potential of the mixture was evaluated by assessing general toxicological end points, serum chemistry and histopathology of vital organs. The mixture decreased body weight and water consumption and increased weights of brain, liver, and kidneys with 10x and 100x doses. After 30 days of exposure, no appreciable changes were found in any blood clinical markers. After 60 days, only the 100x dose, while after 90 days both 10x and 100x doses increased activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase and levels of urea nitrogen and creatinine and decreased total protein and albumin levels, but alanine aminotransferase activity and glucose level were not affected. At 10x and 100x exposure levels, qualitatively similar, but dose-dependent vascular, degenerative, and necrotic changes were observed in brain, liver, and kidney. The results indicate that subchronic exposure to the metal mixture affected general health of male rats by altering the functional and structural integrity of kidney, liver, and brain at 10 and 100 times the mode concentrations of the individual metals in Indian water sources, but exposure at mode concentrations of contemporary water contamination levels or at concentrations equivalent to the MPL for individual metals in drinking water may not cause any health hazards in male rats.

The present work deals with the removal of Brilliant Green dye from wastewater using a poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel composite (PAA-K hydrogel) prepared by incorporation of kaoline clay. The composite has been synthesized using ultrasound assisted polymerization process as well as the conventional process, with an objective of showing the better effectiveness of ultrasound assisted synthesis. It has been observed that the hydrogel prepared by ultrasound assisted polymerization process showed better results. The optimum conditions for the removal of dye are pH of 7, temperature of 35°C, initial dye concentration of 30mg/L and hydrogel loading of 1g. The extent of removal of dye increased with an increase in the contact time and initial dye concentration. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model has been developed to explain the adsorption kinetics of dye on the PAA-K hydrogel. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous in nature and the PAA-K hydrogel prepared by ultrasound process is a promising adsorbent compared to conventional process. The obtained adsorption data has also been fitted into commonly used adsorption isotherms and it has been found that Freundlich as well as Langmuir adsorption isotherm models fits well to the experimental results.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) and citrinin (CIT) are nephrotoxic mycotoxins produced mainly by fungal species Aspergillus ochraceus and Penicillium citrinum, respectively, which have been found to occur together in various food and feed commodities. In the present study, both OTA and CIT were evaluated for their potential to induce oxidative damage by determining lipid peroxidation (LPO) through malondialdehyde (MDA) assay and apoptosis by flow cytometry, gel electrophoresis and renal ultrastructural morphology in rabbits fed with diets containing OTA (0.75 mg/kg feed), CIT (15 mg/kg feed) and OTA þ CIT (0.75 and 15 mg/kg feed, respectively) up to 60 days. The concentration of MDA was found significantly higher in OTA and combination-treated groups. OTA and combination-treated groups revealed more apoptotic cells in flow cytometry when compared with the CIT-treated group. Characteristic DNA fragmentation, as evidenced by ladder pattern in electrophoresis appeared in the toxin-treated groups. Ultrastructurally, interstitial cells showed nuclear fragmentation and cytoplasmic blebbing in OTA-and CIT-treated groups; whereas, proximal convoluted tubular epithelial cells, besides interstitial cells, showed nuclear fragmentation in the combined treatment group. The results suggested that low concentrations of OTA and CIT either alone or in combination induced apoptosis in a time-dependent manner and LPO in the rabbit kidney, which appeared to play a major role in the pathogenesis of nephrotoxicity. Furthermore, the interaction of these two nephrotoxic mycotoxins was found to be additive.

Dietary exposures to food pollutants such as mycotoxin(s) or pesticide(s) are most significant due to their adverse effects on the production and reproduction in animals and the human population. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the teratogenic potential of citrinin (CIT) and endosulfan either alone or in combination in pregnant rats during gestational days 6-20. Endosulfan (1 mg kg(-1) body weight, by oral intubation) and CIT (10 mg kg(-1) feed, through diet) when administered either alone or in combination in pregnant rats caused significant teratogenic effects in the developing fetuses. There was no maternal mortality, however, reduced maternal weight gain and number of live fetuses and increased fetal resorptions were recorded in all the treated groups. The fetal body weights and crown to rump lengths were significantly decreased and the per cent gross, visceral and skeletal anomalies were significantly increased in the fetuses of dams of all the treated groups. The internal hydrocephalus, cerebellar hypoplasia, microphthalmia, contracted and notched kidneys, multilobulated liver, dilated renal pelvis, incomplete ossification of skull bones, rib anomalies and sacral and caudal vertebrae agenesis were the important fetal malformations. The occurrence of fetal gross, skeletal and visceral malformations was more severe in the combination group, suggesting an additive interaction of CIT and endosulfan in inducing developmental toxicity in Wistar rats.
