Mapping and identification of vectors responsible for mangrove suppression in the Southern Bahia Lowlands, BrazilA B S T R A C TThe mangrove ecosystem represents 8% of the entire coastline of the planet and occupies a total area of 181,077 km2. Brazil is the second largest country in terms of mangrove areas, second only to Indonesia. The aim of the present study was to map and identify the main vectors responsible for the suppression of mangrove cover in the Southern Lowlands of Bahia, Brazil, from Landsat satellite images available for the period 1994-2017. based on supervised classification using the Maxver method. The accuracy of the classification obtained was verified through field truth, Global Accuracy indices, and kappa and Tau agreement coefficients. The classes that presented larger coverage area in the analyzed period were: dense ombrophilous vegetation, agriculture, exposed soil and mangrove. Two main vectors responsible for the suppression of mangrove forests were identified: the disorderly expansion of urban areas (especially the municipality of Valença) and the advance of clandestine shrimp farming due to the installation of shrimp farms without due environmental licensing process (mainly in the municipality of Nilo Peçanha). The use of geotechnologies, especially Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems, were fundamental tools in the identification of these vectors responsible for the suppression of mangrove areas in the study area of the Southern Bahia Lowlands.Key-words: environmental impacts, satellite image, shrimp farming.
The article aimed to carry out a multitemporal mapping to show the expansion of shrimp farming in the communities of São Francisco and Barra dos Carvalhos, in the municipality of Nilo Peçanha (BA), from the records available in the free tool of Google Earth Pro. The mangrove is of paramount importance for countless estuarine and marine species that use the mangrove environments for shelter, food and refuge, as well as for sustaining fishing and shellfish carried out by artisanal fisheries communities and their food security. High-resolution images were selected for the years 2002, 2012 and 2017. The methodological approach was based on the visual analysis of the images, to identify the classes of use and coverage and the main vectors responsible for the suppression of mangrove areas. To support vectorization, an identification key was developed based on the principles of photointerpretation. Field outings were performed to collect data with the GPS receiver to validate the mapping. In the three years analyzed, it was possible to notice that there was a significant advance in the shrimp farming class. Between 2012 and 2017 there was a significant increase in the number of shrimp farming tanks, now occupying an area of 1.0 km2, an increase of 0.80 km2, corresponding to an area of occupation 5 times greater (500% expansion) than that observed in 2002.
Studies around the world show an increase in global average temperatures, with a consequent increase in extreme events and changes in the distribution of precipitation, causing a decrease in agricultural production and changes in planting areas. This study analyzed the exposure to climate risk that the coffee crop in the region of Alta Mogiana/SP, Brazil has been presenting in the past thirty years . Time series of daily data of maximum and minimum temperature and precipitation were used. By the statistical tests we observed a trend of increase in maximum temperatures daily of approximately 1.4°C and minimum daily of 0.8°C in the municipalities of the region and a trend towards a decrease in precipitation of 0.9 mm daily, indicating greater exposure of the coffee crop in the region to climate risk and increased vulnerability for the coffee producer. In view of these analyses, a literature review was carried out, suggesting agroforestry systems and mechanical irrigation as the most promising strategies to manage climate risk in coffee plantations. In addition, drought-resistant cultivars, training courses for farmers, increased rural insurance, and nutritional control of the plants can also be considered efficient options for climate exposure in coffee plantations from Alta Mogiana.
