La formación del profesorado es una prioridad en los últimos años en la investigación educativa y en las políticas de reforma de la educación en la región latinoamericana. Este interés se debe a la gran complejidad de la formación del maestro, los intentos realizados en las últimas décadas para responder a esa complejidad y los pobres resultados obtenidos. En este artículo presentamos un análisis de las demandas que la globalización y la educación del país plantean a la formación docente; se revisan y analizan los principales enfoques y paradigmas vigentes en la formación en las últimas décadas, señalando por qué no responden a los actuales desafíos que presenta la educación del país; finalmente, se presentan algunas opciones que podrían contribuir a hacer de la formación del profesorado un puntal de las transformaciones que requieren la educación y el país.
