Podemos supor que Públio Cornélio Tácito, historiador e político proeminente de família oriunda do Sul da Gália, provavelmente nasceu logo após a ascensão de Nero Cláudio César, em 54 d.C. Acredita-se que seu pai tenha servido a este imperador como oficial de finanças por volta do mesmo período, pertencendo à ordem equestre e inserido em um grupo social cuja importância na execução das funções administrativas elevava-se gradualmente durante o Principado.As informações mais concretas sobre a biografia de Tácito, assim como os principais subsídios sobre diversos autores de seu período, são derivadas de seus próprios escritos, em especial da biografia sobre seu sogro Júlio Agrícola. Da mesma forma, a correspondência de seu amigo Plínio, o Jovem traz algumas pistas relativas à sua atividade dentro da vida pública romana, nos primeiros anos do século II d.C., -embora não existam certezas sobre o prenome do autor (Gaio ou Públio), bem como 1 Doutorando do Programa de Pós-graduação em História Social da FFLCH-UP sob a orientação do prof. dr. Norberto Luiz Guarinello e membro do Laboratório de Estudos do Império Romano e Mediterrâneo Antigo (Leir-MA/USP).
Por volta dos anos de 26 e 27 d.C., Tibério fixou-se em sua villa na ilha de Capri, de onde passou a governar até o fim de sua vida. Seu afastamento de Roma pode ser considerado um evento histórico relevante ao processo de consolidação do Principado como um dos passos de uma integração mediterrânica.
