A b s t r a c t: This article is an attempt to illustrate relations between the theory and practice of the military activity of Polish bishops under the rule of the Piast dynasty. The problem is discussed based on an analysis of the locally formulated ideal of episcopal power and the ideological and legal patterns reaching Poland that regulated the possibilities of using weapons by clergymen, and, in particular, defined the ways in which churchmen participated in wars and in declaring and conducting them. K e y w o r d s: bishops and war; warrior-bishop, ideals of episcopal power; canon law; clerical arms-bearing; episcopal warfare; Piast Poland.
W polskiej historiografii istnieje pewna tradycja badań nad praktykami pokutnymi we wczesnym średniowieczu 1. Brunona
Aleksander z Malonne -persona mixta. Wojowniczy biskup na krańcach chrześcijańskiego świata i jego kronikarski portret* Zarys treści: Autor omawia fragment kroniki mistrza Wincentego (ks. 3, rozdz. 8-9) poświęcony biskupowi płoc-kiemu, Aleksandrowi z Malonne (1129-1156) i jego zaangażowaniu w militarną obronę Kościoła mazowieckiego przed atakami pogańskich Prusów. Porównawcza analiza tego portretu ukazuje dobrą orientację Wincentego we współczesnym kronikarzowi dyskursie nad obecnością osób duchownych w sferze militarnej, a zwłaszcza rozeznanie kronikarza w argumentacji legitymizującej orężną aktywność biskupów. Analizowany fragment zdradza znajomość pism Bernarda z Clairvaux, szczególnie inspirację dziełem Liber ad Milites Templi de laude novae militiae, w któ-rym Wincenty znalazł dodatkowy argument uzasadniający wizję podwójnej natury biskupa -rycerza i kapłana.
Dwa ciała biskupaPrzynajmniej od czasów Ernsta H. Kantorowicza historycy przywykli wyróżniać ideowe komponenty ludzkich portretów, literackich czy artystycznych, oraz kategoryzować je według przynależno-ści do dwóch różnych porządków, boskiego i ludzkiego, spajanych jednak w jednym, niepodzielnym "mistyczno-politycznym ciele". Owe kategorie są szczególnym przedmiotem zainteresowania historyków kierujących swą uwagę ku sakralnym wymiarom władzy monarszej, znacznie rzadziej natomiast Studia Źródłoznawcze, t. LV p-ISSN
