Reptiles and amphibians have been maintained in captivity for over one hundred years. The authors review the husbandry practices necessary for the optimal health of these species: for some species these are well known, while such information is lacking for other species. Infectious and parasitic diseases are presented in tabulated form, and a number of references are cited for those seeking more detailed information.
Summary Evaluation of post‐mortem findings for 1,400 zoo and wild animals (Mammals) The post‐mortem reports are discussed in respect of 1,400 wild mammals from zoos, dealers and private collections. Tables present the results separately for 11 Orders, each of them classified for the results with each species. Results are also classified under five headings — diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, and other diseases. The parasitic species affecting each order of mammals are indicated separately. Finally, the findings for all the animals autopsied are gathered together in a table and briefly discussed. The results show that under the heading “other diseases” there are included 69.6 % of all the cases, with diseases of the alimentary and respiratory system and wounds being of particular importance. Bacterial diseases come second — 30.3 % — and within this group the most important are infections with cocci, tuberculosis and colisepticaemia. There follow parasitic diseases (14.6 %). Because of the absence of methods for detecting viruses, these account for only 1.9 % of the findings, while mycotic diseases account for a mere 0.9 %.
Summary Atypical Tuberculosis in the dog with giant cell formation A case of atypical tuberculosis caused by the human type of tubercle bacillus is described in a male Hovaward dog 4 1/2 years old. The main clinical symptoms were enlargement of the retropharyngeal and parotid lymph nodes with marked oedema and fistula formation. These nodes as well as the pulmonary lymph nodes and the pneumonic lung tissue showed giant cells of the Langhans and foreign‐body types. It is suggested that their formation may have been related to long continued treatment with antibiotics. Another unusual finding was a marked thrombosis of the interlobular branches of the portal vein and also of subserous and submucous veins in the wall of the stomach and large intestine which had resulted in ulceration of the mucosa.
