The quality of the seeds is of great importance for the cultivation of plants, however, the quality can be altered by the abiotic effects, amongst such, saline stress. Salinity is one of the great obstacles faced by modern agriculture, however, alternatives have been researched to mitigate its effects, where it is possible to mention the use of salicylic acid. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) seeds cultivated using applications of salicylic acid to attenuate the irrigation water salinity. The experimental design was a completely randomized complete block design in incomplete factor scheme, with five conductivities for irrigation water (0.5, 1.3, 3.25, 5.2, 6.0 dS m -1 ) and five salicylic acid doses (0.0, 0.29, 1.0, 1.71 and 2.0 mM), with five and four replicates, respectively. The electrical conductivity presented an effect on germination, while the salicylic acid presented an effect on the germination speed index, emergence speed index, shoot length, root and seedling length, and seedlings dry mass. The highest correlations were obtained amongst the germination variables. Therefore, it is possible to affirm that salicylic acid can be used up to the dose of 1.0 mM with no further damage to basil seeds' quality.
Palavras-chave: Passiflora edulis Deg., irrigação, cobertura morta EFFECT OF THE VOLUME OF WATER AND OF SOIL MULCH ON THE INITIAL GROWTH OF PASSION FRUIT ABSTRACTThe experiment was carried out in a randomized block using a factorial design 4 x 2, using polyethylene bags with 50 cm heights and 36 cm diameters in order to evaluate the effects of 1.25, 2.50, 3.75 and 5.00 L of water twice a week in the presence and absence of soil mulch with (Brachiaria decumbens), on the growth of the yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deg) during the first ninety days after transplanting. The diameter of the stem expressed growth of plants better than height, as it presented the same statistical significance in relation to the number of productive branches, floral buttons, healthy new fruits and dry matter of the roots, stems and leaves. The supply of 10 L of water in two weekly applications of 5 L maintained the substrate water content at a level adequate for crop development, however the soil mulch exercised a positive effect only on the dry matter of stems and roots of the plants.

PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES OF MULUNGU SUBMITTED TO SALT STRESS AND APPLICATION OF SALICYLIC ACID 2 ABSTRACT Mulungu (Erythrina velutina Willd.) is a forest species native to the Northeast region of Brazil, being used for economic and medicinal purposes. However, its physiological performance can be compromised by several biotic and abiotic factors, among them, saline stress. That way, the application of salicylic acid, phytohormone of phenolic origin, becomes a promising strategy in the search to minimize these deleterious effects. Thus, the objective was to learn the physiological responses of mulungu irrigated with saline water associated with the application of salicylic acid. The design was a randomized complete block, in an incomplete factorial scheme, using the Box Central Composite (CCB) matrix with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0.5; 1.74; 4.75; 7.76 and 9.0 dS m-1), and five salicylic acid doses (0.0, 0.29, 1.0, 1.71 and 2.0 mM), with four replicates. Gas exchange, fluorescence and chlorophyll indices were evaluated 60 days after irrigation with saline water. Data were submitted to analysis of variance by the F test, in cases of significance polynomial regression analysis was performed. The salinity of irrigation water causes deleterious effects on the gas exchange of Erythrina velutina Willd. The chlorophyll indices were positively affected by saline levels applied and the initial fluorescence of the plants was attenuated by the application of salicylic acid. Mesosphaerum suaveolens (L.) Kuntze is a species of high phytotherapeutic and aromatic potential and quite widespread in Northeastern Brazil. However, the scarcity of good quality water and the high content of salts contained in the soil and irrigation water of the semi-arid region can compromise the crop growth and yield . Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of seed treatment with salicylic acid on the growth rates and the fluorescence indexes of chlorophyll 'a' from M. suaveolens plants irrigated with saline waters. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with a 5 x 5 incomplete factorial design, with five electrical conductivities of the irrigation water (ECw = 0.5, 1.45, 5.00, 8.55 and 10.0 dS m -1 ) and five salicylic acid doses (SA = 0.0, 0.29, 1.0, 1.71 and 2.0 mM L -1 ), generated by the Box Central Compound matrix. The evaluated variables were the absolute and relative growth rates for stem height and diameter and the indexes of fluorescence and quantum yield of photosystem II. The salinity of the water reduces the growth and the fluorescence indexes of the plants. The seeds treatment with salicylic acid at the doses of 1.99 and 0.69 mM L -1 attenuates the damaging effect from saline stress on the absolute and relative growths for the stem diameter.
