Objective: To characterize the inhibitory effect (IE) in the otoacoustic emission (OAE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) in newborns at high and low risk for hearing loss. Design: Cross-sectional study. Patients and Methods: Seventy-nine newborns at low risk for hearing loss and 46 at high risk underwent transient evoked OAE (TEOAE), distortion product OAE (DPOAE) and ABR testing with or without the presence of contralateral white noise presented at a level of 60 dB SPL. Results: For both low- and high-risk newborns, there were no significant differences in IE between the left and right ears. There was a statistically significant difference in the right-ear IE between the low- and high-risk group for DPOAE and ABR testing. There was also greater agreement of the efferent system evaluation outcomes between TEOAE and ABR. Conclusions: ABR testing detected IE in a greater number of newborns in the low-risk, as compared to the high-risk group.
Purpose: to compare two newborn hearing screening protocols with benchmarks of passes and failure distinct. Methods: a retrospective study. It was evaluated the records of 312 infants (s) and babies of both sexes and up to 90 days after birth in September 2013 to September 2014 in the Neonatal Hearing Screening Service of Clinical Speech and Hearing Division School of the origin instituition. TEOAE were analyzed in two different benchmarks and they were compared. Results: of the 312 patients evaluated, there was a greater number of male patients (53.85%), the majority of patients aged 30 days or less (65.06%) and only 6.09% had more than 60 days.
Purpose: to verify if the percentage of newborns that referred at screening hearing phase of the newborn hearing screening service of the School Clinic of the University Center in Várzea Grande is within the specified quality indicators of the Newborn Hearing Screening services.
The Zika virus is transmitted between humans by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and has become a public health emergency, as declared by the World Health Organization. Studies have reported the virus to be associated with hearing alterations in patients, following infection. This study was conceived in view of the importance of hearing for communication, associated with the limited number of reports on the impact of Zika virus on the hearing system of adults. The aim of the study was to characterize the otological findings in two adult patients, following infection with the Zika virus. The otological findings observed in two outpatients of an otorhinolaryngology service were described, both of whom reported hearing complaints immediately following the clinical symptoms of Zika virus infection. Both adult patients reported the following symptoms: discomfort, skin rash, joint pain, auricular fullness, and hearing loss. Serologic testing (IgG) for Zika virus was performed. The audiological findings were unilateral peripheral hearing loss in one of the patients, alterations in contralateral acoustic reflexes in both patients, and alteration in the brainstem auditory-evoked potential in one patient. The audiological findings demonstrate possible neuronal involvement in the manifested complaints, whether or not associated with the peripheral component, in patients infected with Zika virus.
