Double presence, which is understood as the need to respond simultaneously to the demands of paid and domestic-family work, mostly affects women and may negatively affect their health. Our hypothesis is that double presence increases as a function of the demands of domestic-family work, but is also associated with management practices related to the availability of time for paid work, prolonged and atypical work schedules, and heightened demands. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample of the salaried population in Spain. Information was gathered through a standardized questionnaire administered through home visits. Statistical analysis shows a relationship between double presence and the demands of increased work schedules, rotating schedules, irregular schedules, and exposure to psychosocial risks (high quantitative and emotional psychological demands). Double presence should be considered as a variable in the evaluation of psychosocial risks, and collective bargaining should consider negotiating clauses that can impact it positively.
This article has two objectives: to analyse the implementation of dual vocational education and training (VET) in Spain and to study the school-to-work transition of young people who complete dual VET. The article draws on a study that was based on 43 interviews, a discussion group and document analysis. The results show that dual VET has been implemented through a school-based model, as opposed to the firm-based ‘German’ model. Participants may be employed on the basis of training contracts or internships. Whichever approach was taken, we found that young people who have completed dual VET enjoy a rapid school-to-work transition.
Abstract. Discourses and strategies on work life balance in the collective bargainingThis article examines five hypotheses related to the development and implementation of the Work Life Balance Law through collective bargaining, and to the meaning that the notion of work life balance acquires to the different social actors. The results of the research suggest that while the European employment policy plays an «inferred effect» of this issue, it keeps a secondary place in the collective bargaining. Also while trade unions understand the notion of work life balance as a question to be managed through collective bargaining, employers place it in the domain of the individualized management characteristic of the human resources policy.
