De 1870 à 1914, le directeur d’école, distingué parmi les instituteurs, est un personnage essentiel dans le champ de l’enseignement primaire public de la Seine. À travers l’étude statistique des carrières des instituteurs et l’analyse qualitative des correspondances administratives, nous reconstituons le jeu de relations sociales qui, dans une institution scolaire en pleine mutation, entre construction d’écoles et laïcisation, conduit à la nomination de ces individus pour assumer la direction des gros établissements scolaires urbains. La confrontation du discours des acteurs – instituteurs, inspecteur primaire, municipalité – et de modèles biographiques multivariés restitue, grâce à la complémentarité des démarches, la complexité de cet univers social.
