L’article s’intéresse à la présence scénique des ballons aérostatiques au cours du long xix e siècle, dans ses dimensions spectaculaires, dramaturgiques et culturelles. Dès l’invention des frères Montgolfier en 1783, le ballon entre en scène et traverse tous les genres, du vaudeville à la féerie, en passant par la revue et le mélodrame. Grâce au ballon, le théâtre divertit en mettant à distance les prétentions à la maîtrise humaine des éléments, en multipliant les jeux avec l’espace scénique et ses limites, en déployant des décors fascinants et en les mettant en mouvement grâce aux innovations techniques, offrant au public un voyage dans un fauteuil. Cette étude d’une vingtaine de pièces contribue à l’histoire culturelle de la conquête de l’air et montre comment dramaturges et metteurs en scène font du ciel un espace de jeu.
