+++

In the Bordeaux region, the variations in the ratio « vegetative part/productive part » of vines has been studied over several years.

Variations of « nodes/vie » summer pruning, leaf and bunch thinning were effectued.

To improve the quality of wine, in years when the crop potentiel is very high, it is advised to thin out the grape bunches by about 50 p. 100 at the end of july ; to summer prune less severely leaving about 1,10 meters of foliage, and to thin out excess leaves close to the grape bunches at the beginning of september, in every case.

According to previous scientific results, which were climatic and physiological, a practical synthesis is presented to guide concretely the vine grower in the choice and the definition of the training system. Qualitative and technicoeconomic elements are taken in consideration. The example illustrated here concerns temperate vineyards and specially the vineyard of Bordeaux. Better than the classical wide vines and even than the traditional vines, the vines « in lyre » seem to be the most advisable in most of the situations.
