Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most common thermoplastic polymers and its durability has become a major environmental concern. The current public debate on plastic debris also triggered the revision of PET recycling technologies. This Research Article focuses on the chemical recycling of PET by means of methanolysis. The process degrades PET into two main reaction products, dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and ethylene glycol (EG). Subsequent separation by distillation combined with crystallization removes critical impurities and non‐PET components from co‐polymers, providing monomers of high purity needed for re‐polymerization purposes.
Sulzer Chemtech develops chemical processes in close collaboration with its customers that lead to lower operating and investment costs as well as reduced environmental impact, while at the same time increasing the yield. In this context, innovative technologies and collaboration in global teams play an important role. This is exemplified by the continuous production of fatty acid esters using reactive distillation.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
