A B S T R A C THigh prices and the scarcity of hardwoods require the use of alternative wood sources, such as the Guapuruvu (Schizolobium parahybae), an arboreal species native to the Atlantic Forest, which has fast growth and high market potential. However, there is no information on its cultivation in the Brazilian Cerrado. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the contribution of mineral fertilization and liming in a Cerrado soil on the initial growth of Schizolobium parahybae. The experiment was set in a randomized block design, with 4 treatments (Cerrado soil; soil + liming; soil + fertilizer; and soil + fertilizer + liming) and 15 replicates. The following variables were analyzed: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, total, shoot, leaf, root and stem dry matter, and root/shoot ratio. The obtained data were subjected to the analysis of variance, Tukey test and regression analysis. During the initial growth, Schizolobium parahybae can be cultivated in a Brazilian Cerrado soil only under mineral fertilization, with no need for soil liming.

RIBEIRO, P. H. GROWTH RATES AND PRODUCTION OF SUNFLOWER IRRIGATED WITH SALINE WATER AND NITROGEN DOSES 2 ABSTRACT Sunflower is a crop with a great potential of utilization in social inclusion projects as part of grain and biodiesel production systems. The use of saline waters for irrigation is a reality because it has increased water availability, crop production and control of environmental risks. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the growth rates and production of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L., cv. EMBRAPA 122/V-2000), irrigated with saline water and nitrogen fertilization. The experiment was conducted in a semi controlled environment in 20 L plastic pots filled with Regosols of loamy sand texture. A randomized block split plot experimental design was used with five irrigation water salinity levels - ECw (0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1 – Main Plots) and five nitrogen levels (60, 80, 100, 120 and 140% of the recommended dose for the crop in protected environments – Secondary Plots), with three replicates totalizing 75 experimental plots. The absolute and relatives growth rates of plant height and stem diameter, the number and dry phytomass of achenes and the chapter diameter were analyzed. There was no significant effect of nitrogen treatments on the growth rates, however the dry phytomass of the achenes was significantly affected. Water salinity of the irrigation water had a significant effect on the growth rates only after 30 days of growth, showing the tolerance of the plant to salinity during vegetative growth, however, significant effect was observed on phytomass of chapters, total achenes, non-viable achenes and percentage of viable achenes, decreasing in general sunflower production. The interaction between water salinity and nitrogen was not significant for any of the studied variables. Keywords: Helianthus annuus L., salinization, plant nutrition.
The present study evaluated the effect of NPK fertilization and available soil water levels on the biometric response and water use of sunflower cv. Embrapa 122-V2000. The experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Engineering Department of the Federal University of Campina Grande, Paraiba State, Brazil, during 2009 and 2010, in a semi-controlled greenhouse using the Eutrofic Regosol. The treatments were defined according to a Baconian matrix, with eleven doses of the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and four available soil water levels. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized design, with three replicates, in a total of 132 sample units. No effect of N and K was observed on plant height. However, it increased significantly with P levels. The stem diameter and the leaf area were affected by the N and K and not by the P. The number of leaves increased significantly with the amount of N, P and K fertilizer. Available soil water content increased significantly in all the variables studied. The best sunflower performance and water consumption were obtained with the 100:120:120 kg•ha −1 NPK and 100% of the available soil water content treatment.
Palavras-chave: vazão média, salinidade, uniformidade ZOCOLER, J. L.; RIBEIRO, P. L.PERFORMANCE OF A DRIPPING IRRIGATION SYSTEM APPYING SALINE WATER 2 ABSTRACT With the increasing search for water of good quality and maximum efficiency in application, dripping irrigation has grown in areas of family farming and smallholdings. The Brazilian northeast with its poor rainwater distribution has suffered from lack of water in several regions, which has led to the use of saline water. The objective of this study was to evaluate the flow, distribution uniformity, process capability index and the statistical quality control of Shewhart of a self-compensating drip emitter with a 2.3 L h-1 flow rate using saline water. Randomized blocks with a 6 x 4 factorial design was used with six levels of saline irrigation water (0.6; 1.5; 2.5; 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1) and four operating pressures (59, 98, 137 and 157 kPa) with three replicates. The coefficient of manufacturing variation was classified as excellent (<5%) for all levels of salinity. The salinity levels of 0.6, 1.5, 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1 decreased flow rate according to the pressure variation. Keywords: mean flow rate, salinity, uniformity
