Non-native species have been introduced at escalating rates during the last decades, mainly due to the dispersion generated by the increasing trade and transport worldwide. Mollusks, the second largest metazoan phylum in terms of species richness, are no exception to this pattern, but, to date, a comprehensive synthesis of non-native mollusk species (NNMS) in South America was not available. For this purpose, an e-discussion group was formed with malacologists and taxonomists from South America, where we exchanged and analyzed bibliography, databases and information about NNMS, providing expert opinion to this assessment. The first list of non-native mollusk species for South America, considering terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments, includes 86 NNMS distributed in 152 ecoregions (terrestrial, freshwater and marine) of the 189 recognized for the South American continent. Information on their native region, vectors, first record for South America and distribution, are also provided. In the analysis of the distribution of the NNMS and the entry points of each species (e.g., ports, cargo and passenger airports, cities) and status of conservation of the ecoregions, four hot spots were recognized: Subtropical-Atlantic,
Only 15 families of decapod crustaceans living as larvae in oceanic waters of northern Chile survived the strong impact of the El Niño 1982-83 event. A key considering only their most conspicuous external characters, without specimens dissection, is given. These families represent one third of the total reported for the area living under "normal" oceanographic conditions; and at the level of species the 22 collected are almost one seventh of their total of 150. Species introduced in the area with more septentrional waters belong to the families Penaeidae and Sicyoniidae. Collected larvae were mainly those from intertidal and sublittoral waters.
Larvae and early development stages of decapod crustaceans from Chile: published descriptions ABSTRACT. Larval descriptions of decapod crustaceans are essential for the understanding of life history strategies, stock-recruitment relationships, and plankton ecology. To facilitate such studies, we provide information concerning published descriptions of the early life stages of marine and freshwater decapods inhabiting Chilean waters. Publication of morphological studies on larval decapods started in Chile in 1936, and the number of such publications showed a clear peak between 1967 and 1973. Up to now, the complete larval development of 13.4% of the Chilean decapods has been described. Knowledge regarding the larval stages of caridean shrimps is extremely poor, while such information is available for 16% and 15% of the anomuran and brachyuran species reported from Chile, respectively. The absence of larval descriptions for some commercially important species affect not only the understanding of the biology of these decapods, but also complicates the development of adequate management strategies.
). These gastropod shells correspond to juvenile and young adult specimens, whose lengths oscillate between 20 and 145 mm. The wide range of sizes found indicates that collectors did not make mollusk selection by sizes during the captures. The majority of these specimens are of a size longer than 50 mm. This latter length corresponds to first maturity size found in current Concholepas concholepas populations. The abundance of this species in the shellmidden is greater in the most recent sites: 46,200 specimens in LV166 and 4,185,000 in LV036. The variability in the records substantiates the hypothesis that the principal cause in the observed changes was originated in palaeoclimatic changes that affected directly the ecologic characteristics of the region, and influenced, indirectly, the species extraction.
The pedunculate barnacle Scalpellum projectum Nilsson-Cantell, 1930, was described based on benthic material from a telegraph cable recovered from deep waters off Antofagasta (~23ºS). No new records have been reported for this species worldwide since its original description. Six adult females of S. projectum were collected during recent studies of communities associated with methane seeps. The material was taken from three stations located between 34º42' and 36º22'S and at depths of 846 to 922 m. We provide taxonomic information based on the external morphology of the specimens, whose sizes coincide in general terms with those of the original description. No male specimens were observed; these are smaller, aberrant in form, and live within the scuta in the capitulum of the females. With this second finding, the distributional range of this species, previously only reported for the slope off Chile, is extended about 17º latitude southwards (1,800 km) and its bathymetric range is expanded by 200 m.
ABSTRACT. Trichopeltarion corallinus (Faxon, 1893), a decapod of the family Atelecyclidae, is recorded for the first time in Chile. Seven specimens were captured by bottom trawling at five sites on the continental slope. All the specimens were associated with hard substrates and at least one was associated with a recently discovered methane seep area. The stations were located between 18º and 42ºS and at depths from 507 to 922 m. After its original description, the species was reported for Peru from approximately 10º to 17º S and at depths of 860 to 870 m. This first record of the species for Chile extends its geographic distribution about 25º (about 2,775 km) southwards and expands its bathymetric range as well. Moreover, a male specimen of T.
