Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a questão indígena brasileira durante os anos centrais da ditadura militar a partir de uma perspectiva transnacional. Essa abordagem enfatiza fenômenos históricos baseados em pessoas e ideias, emancipando-os dos Estados nacionais como uma estrutura “natural” para o estudo da história. A primeira parte deste texto discute a importância da opinião pública nas relações internacionais para, posteriormente, compreender como o Estado brasileiro encarou as interferências estrangeiras em questões que os governantes do período ditatorial acreditavam ser de competência nacional. Posteriormente, a partir da reflexão acerca do poder simbólico dos povos indígenas no Brasil e no exterior, será feita uma análise em duas partes: na primeira, um estudo de caso focado no impacto que o Relatório Figueiredo – ao ser divulgado internacionalmente – teve na França; em seguida, estenderemos para o âmbito transnacional nossas observações sobre os prejuízos ocasionados pelas denúncias contidas no supracitado relatório, procurando encontrar os vasos comunicantes entre o que estava acontecendo no Brasil, sua leitura pela opinião pública internacional, as formas como as autoridades militares agiram para proteger a imagem externa do país e, também, as possíveis vantagens obtidas pelos atores nacionais que, nos anos 1970, atuavam em favor da causa indígena. História em Quarentena foi um projeto de história pública elaborado com o intuito de lidar com as incertezas geradas pela crise sanitária decorrentes da pandemia da covid-19, propondo refletir sobre temas ligados à divulgação do conhecimento histórico. A partir dos parâmetros teórico-metodológicos da história pública, este artigo analisa as principais diretrizes que balizaram o projeto História em Quarentena, além de narrar seu desenvolvimento e avaliar seus resultados. Nessa discussão, ganham especial relevância a percepção de sucesso e fracasso, a importância da história pública como ferramenta para ampliar a inserção do conhecimento histórico na esfera pública em momentos de crise e, também, os desafios de construir um empreendimento dessa natureza diante das dificuldades criadas pela pandemia. As transformações da proposta inicial do projeto, ocorridas ao longo de seu desenvolvimento, podem funcionar como uma chave de compreensão sobre os obstáculos que a história pública enfrenta para atrair um público amplo. Indica-se, ainda, a necessidade de os historiadores estarem atentos às questões postas pelo presente para facilitar o estabelecimento de diálogos com a sociedade, evitando que as produções historiográficas circulem apenas entre seus pares.
