This paper examines the relative influence of social network norms on sexual risk-taking among women seeking a new partner in Quebec (Canada). A survey was conducted among 430 women, 30 to 54 years of age, and living without a partner. Condom use is significantly influenced by the norms of women's different social networks: confidants, social circles through which they meet partners (e.g., family, friends, internet or newspapers virtual communities), with a minority following prescribed condom use habits. Further the results indicate that among the study participants the search for love and well being, social proximity, feelings of trust and intimacy that appear to evolve almost instantly in new encounters, are in conflict with the prescribed condom-use norms. These results suggest that there is a need to build new norms for starting relationships, for improved dialogue among women and between women and men on affective solitude. The findings also underscore the need for public health interventions that seek to influence social networks as well as the behavior of individuals.
This article presents results drawn from an empirical research on a sample of mothers suffering from drug abuse who had recently given birth. Using a combined quantitative and qualitative approach, this study’s main objective was to better our understanding of these women’s experience in order to identify keys for intervention. Data indicate, on one hand, that the participants had been through negative experiences in their childhood and in their adolescence and, on the other hand, that for most of them the birth of their child appeared as an opportunity to change the course of things
The overconsumption of psychoactive substances in the workplace has been given greater attention for the past few years in Quebec. To overcome the problems linked with this overconsumption, a number of original initiatives have been taken in this context, for example, this network of union workplace counsellors established by a large trade union confederation. The object of this initial qualitative study was to better understand and describe the logics of action, transformation or change in problematic patterns of consumption of psychoactive substances (alcohol, drugs, medications) in the workplace. Through this article, we will attempt to identify the logics behind the practices of those helping workers as an adaptative or a transformative action
