Le terme «littératie» prend aujourd’hui, en particulier dans le contexte de la société du savoir, un sens très large. Dans la foulée des travaux de Diana Masny, on parle désormais non plus d’une seule littératie mais plutôt de littératies multiples. On se propose ici d’examiner les quatre littératies multiples – scolaire, personnelle, communautaire et critique – avancées par Masny (2003) à la lumière du contexte francophone minoritaire. La littératie scolaire touche aux apprentissages des contenus des diverses disciplines scolaires mais aussi à la mise en discours de ceux-ci; elle construit un rapport à l’apprentissage disciplinaire et, plus largement, à l’apprentissage. La littératie personnelle touche aux expériences qui permettent à l’élève de se définir, de donner un sens à sa façon d’être, de devenir, en particulier par les interactions qu’il construit avec les textes; elle construit un rapport à soi. La littératie communautaire touche aux interactions que l’élève vit avec sa communauté et, plus largement, avec l’espace francophone; elle construit un rapport au nous, à l’Autre, à l’espace francophone, au devenir francophone. La littératie critique, enfin, a trait à la mise en oeuvre d’un sens critique, qui habilite l’élève à participer à la construction de son monde, de façon active, créative et positive; elle construit un rapport au monde. Plus fondamentalement, les littératies multiples construisent, pour chacune d’elles mais aussi dans la dynamique qui les relie, un rapport à la langue. Elles gagnent par ailleurs à s’inscrire dans la dynamique qui est au coeur du projet éducatif de l’école francophone en milieu minoritaire: celle qui articule l’école, le foyer et la communauté. Les littératies multiples présentent une forte opérativité potentielle pour penser l’intervention pédagogique en milieu francophone minoritaire, sur trois plans: elles constituent d’abord des vecteurs pour une conception curriculaire des contenus d’apprentissage; elles constituent ensuite des vecteurs d’actualisation pédagogique, au sein de situations d’apprentissage, de contenus d’apprentissage; elles constituent enfin un outil d’élaboration d’un profil de sortie. L’école francophone en milieu minoritaire a un rôle stratégiquement important à jouer: proposer aux élèves des expériences d’apprentissage où ils pourront se construire des comportements littératiés.
Depuis quelques années, les «voix des élèves» sont devenues, particulièrement au cycle secondaire, une source importante pour accroître la pertinence de l’intervention éducative en milieu scolaire. Depuis quelques années, les voix des jeunes francophones en milieu minoritaire ont été également mises à profit pour étudier les pratiques langagières et identitaires des élèves qui fréquentent les écoles de langue française. Lors de la tenue du premier colloque sur l’apprentissage en français langue première dans l’Ouest et le Nord canadiens en 2007, six élèves ont pris la parole sur divers aspects liés à leur vécu scolaire en français. Leurs témoignages sont ici commentés sous l’angle de leurs incidences didactiques. Les souvenirs marquants de leur vécu scolaire que les élèves attachent à la langue française sont associés à des expériences d’apprentissage où la langue est vécue, non comme un objet d’études centré très souvent sur son fonctionnement, mais plutôt comme une pratique langagière, vecteur de l’expression d’une affirmation identitaire et d’un attachement à la langue. Les élèves réclament une classe de français envisagée comme un lieu d’échanges et de réflexions sur la langue dans sa dimension pragmatique, qui touchent au vécu d’adolescents francophones au début du XXIe siècle. À la lumière des témoignages, il n’est sans doute pas erroné d’affirmer que le type de travail pédagogique mené sur la langue française, au sein même de l’école francophone, n’est pas sans incidence sur les images que les élèves se développent de la langue, sur le rapport qu’ils se construisent à elle. Il importe en effet de veiller à ce que la langue française ne soit pas perçue, par les élèves eux-mêmes, exclusivement comme la langue de la scolarisation, déconnectée de leur processus de personnalisation et de socialisation. Aux yeux des élèves, il est clair que la finalité ultime de la scolarisation dans l’école francophone dépasse le but langagier, aussi important soit-il, mais vise l’établissement, par les élèves eux-mêmes, d’un rapport affectif et identitaire à la langue française. La pédagogie en milieu francophone minoritaire doit donc être «intervenante» et permettre aux élèves de trouver un sens à devenir francophones.For some years now, the «voices of the students» have become a significant source for increasing the pertinence of educational action in a school setting, particularly in secondary school.
