Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is a highly lethal disease caused by Rickettsia spp. and is transmitted by ticks of the genus Amblyomma. Understanding the epidemiology of BSF in each region can help direct health surveillance actions. The objective of this study was to determine the spatial distribution of vectors and the incidence of BSF in the state of São Paulo. Spatial analysis included confirmed BSF cases between 2009 and 2019; occurrences were registered by municipalities of the state. There were 752 confirmed BSF cases, with incidences ranging between 0.01 and 10.37/10,000 inhabitants. Moran's Global Index for BSF was 0.20 (p = .001), which was indicative of spatial dependence. Moran's map located a cluster of 20 high priority municipalities for BSF and showed that Amblyomma sculptum is the vector involved in Rickettsia rickettsii transmission in these locations. Spatial analysis identified clusters formed by 47, 20 and seven significant municipalities for the presence of A. sculptum, Amblyomma aureolatum and Amblyomma ovale vectors, respectively. Surveillance and prevention actions are necessary in areas that are at high risk for BSF and in areas where the presence of vectors was significant.

RESUMOIntrodução: Pesquisas recentes revelaram que 98% dos proprietários sentem que o cão é, ou quase é, um membro da família. O vínculo ser humano-animal é uma relação dinâmica e mutuamente benéfica. Objetivo: O objetivo desse trabalho foi analisar e sintetizar, por meio de uma revisão narrativa da literatura, os estudos relacionados ao bem-estar e comportamento de cães que orientasse médicos veterinários clínicos de cães. Método: Foram estruturadas estratégias de busca na literatura para as bases de dados MEDLINE (via Pubmed) e LILACS. Também foi realizada a busca manual por meio de busca simples pelo google scholar e das listas de referências dos estudos relevantes. Resultados: Ao todo foram encontrados 431 estudos, dos quais 353 foram excluídos após a leitura dos títulos e resumos. Restaram 78 artigos que foram recuperados na íntegra para verificar a elegibilidade, e 13 foram incluídos nesta revisão narrativa. Discussão e Conclusão: Bem-estar animal se refere à uma ciência que se iniciou em decorrência das pesquisas após a formação do Comitê Brambell na Inglaterra. Esta ciência informa que bem-estar animal envolve uma parte física, uma mental/emocional e a expressão do comportamento natural. Explica o que é melhor para os animais do ponto de vista deles. Esta ciência por ser muito jovem ainda é, infelizmente, desconhecida por muito médicos veterinários clínicos de pequenos animais, particularmente, pelo fato dos primeiros anos se concentrarem em pesquisas nos animais de fazenda, de produção. É fácil, então perceber, o quanto o clínico de pequenos animais, formado há alguns anos, precisa de informações técnicas reunidas em material que possa, facilmente, apresentar o tema e contribuir para uma melhor execução da sua prática profissional, que trará melhor bem-estar para ele mesmo, para os tutores e para os cães que merecem uma vida melhor.Palavras-chave: Comportamento animal. INTRODUCTION: Low back pain is a common symptom among the general population and among manual workers, contributing to high rates of absenteeism and a decrease in overall quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of low back pain in Port of Santos workers, its influence on overall quality of life, physical activity level, and associated absenteeism rate. METHODS: This cross-sectional prevalence study was based on prospective data collection. RESULTS: Eighty-two port workers were interviewed, 97.6% were male, and mean age was 42.9 years. Ethnically, 37.8% reported being brown. Most had completed high school. Longshoreman was the most common occupation, followed by foreman, tallyman, and others. A 44-hour workweek was the most frequent (31.3%), and over 85% of workers reported not working overtime. Most of them were not paid on a production basis. Formal employment, according to Brazilian Labor Law, was 70.7%, and union membership was 64.6%. The mean time working at the port was 11.9 years (standard deviation ± 12.5). Occupational low back pain was reported by 17% of respondents, leading to an absenteeism rate of 19.7%. Physical activities helped improve the feeling of vitality for work performance. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of low back pain among respondents was 17%, not influencing their quality of life, with an absenteeism rate of 19.7%. Doing physical activities was common among respondents.

Objective: Involuntary hospitalization for acute psychiatry cases can be acceptable when there is potential harm. However, there are few reasons for a patient committed on these grounds to stay in an institution for a long period. The objective of the present study was to identify the profile and costs of compulsory hospitalizations over 20 days in a public psychiatric hospital in the coastal region of the state of Sã o Paulo. Methods: Retrospective data were collected from the medical records of 1,064 patients admitted between July 2013 and June 2016 from an intensive mental healthcare unit in Santos, state of Sã o Paulo, Brazil. Results: Records were found of 527 patients who had been hospitalized for at least 21 days during the study period. Long-term hospitalization related to judicial mandates represented 5.9% of the total sample. These patients stayed in the hospital for an average period of 142 days, while patients hospitalized for any other reason stayed an average period of 35 days (p o 0.001). The cost of a longterm court-ordered hospitalization averaged US$ 21,311 per patient. Conclusion: Judicial mandate has been an important reason for the long-term hospitalization of chronic psychiatric patients in Santos, Brazil.

Bovine brucellosis, a zoonotic disease endemic to Brazil, is a serious public health problem. It is a notifiable disease that, like tuberculosis, is regulated through a national control and eradication program. The epidemiological status of bovine brucellosis must be characterized in order to direct measures aimed at controlling the disease. This study focused on analyzing the spatial and temporal distribution of bovine brucellosis in Brazil. An ecological and time series study was conducted based on secondary data reported by the National Animal Health Information System for cases of bovine brucellosis diagnosed in Brazil (2014 - 2018). The gross and average incidence rate of brucellosis was estimated per state. Joinpoint regression was applied to calculate the annual percentage change (APC) in incidence and to identify states with significant trend changes. Spatial analysis of animals with brucellosis was performed using Kernel density estimation. A total of 19,631 animals with bovine brucellosis were confirmed, and the average incidence rate varied from 0.03 to 33.93/100,000 cattle in Brazil. The highest density of positive animals was found in the states of Santa Catarina and Paraná, which can be considered areas of greater transmission of Brucella abortus. Reductions in gross incidence rates were observed in Paraná (APC: -13.2; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -20.3 – -5.4; p=0.01), Rondônia (APC: -44.7; 95%CI: -62.0 - -19.4; p=0.01), Mato Grosso do Sul (APC: -59.0; 95%CI: -77.7 - -24.5; p=0.01), Acre (APC: -40.0; 95%CI: -50.0 - -28.0; p=0.00), and Ceará (APC: -37.9; 95%CI: -50.9 - -21.4; p=0.00). The incidence rate significantly increased in Tocantins (APC: 122.1; 95%CI: 4.5 - 372.2; p=0.04). The findings of this study will be helpful in guiding surveillance and prevention measures aimed at reducing the incidence of bovine brucellosis in Brazil.

O transtorno de acumulação de animais, é uma psicopatologia caracterizada pela aquisição de muitos animais mantidos em espaços inadequados, onde os cuidados básicos de saúde, alimentação e bem-estar são negligenciados. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar o perfil de acumuladores de animais no município de Guarulhos e elaborar um instrumento de coleta de dados para ser utilizado em vistoria técnica nestes casos. Foi realizado um levantamento e análise descritiva dos arquivos de casos de acumuladores de animais atendidos pelo serviço municipal. Dentre os 26 casos recebidos no período de 2012-2017, 12 (46,16%) eram referentes a casos de acumulação de animais. Estas ocorrências foram encaminhadas ao serviço de saúde como denúncias. Os dados obtidos, por meio das análises dos prontuários, foram refinados e, posteriormente, transcritos em planilhas considerando as variáveis de interesse, assim, facilitando o processo de interpretação. Para caracterizar o perfil dos casos de acumuladores, os dados adquiridos foram analisados por meio de cálculos de médias e frequências relativas. O perfil de acumuladores se caracterizou por mulheres, solteiras, idosas, desempregadas ou aposentadas, que residem sozinha em casa própria, portadoras de comorbidades ou fatores psicológicos associados, acumulando cães e gatos, especificamente, cães em sua maioria. O instrumento de vistoria em atenção a indivíduos em situação de acúmulo de animais proposto apresenta caracterização do indivíduo, ambiente, condições gerais dos animais e, ainda, indicadores de comprometimento de bem-estar animal ou maus-tratos.

O presente trabalho relata o caso de um felino deficiente visual, vítima do abandono - que estava alojado em um abrigo – e foi adotado. O felino é um macho, castrado, deficiente visual, de 4 kg adotado em uma ONG, que ao ser escolhido para a adoção foi testado para FIV/FELV, apresentando resultado positivo para FIV e negativo para FELV. Ao longo de quatro anos, com seus adotantes, manifestou diversas afecções relacionadas à retrovirose, tais como dermatofitose, complexo gengivite estomatite felino e outros sinais secundários a FIV. Houve sempre muita compaixão dos tutores para com o felino. A convivência do felino com os familiares e demais animais sempre foi agradável e trouxe muitos momentos de felicidade, e o fato do animal ser FAIDS+ nunca afetou, negativamente, a relação com todos que passaram a conviver com ele.
