A reemergência dos garimpos artesanais de ouro na Amazônia brasileira tem gerado uma série de inquietações. Afinal, quem arca com os custos da devastação ambiental e dos riscos à saúde gerados pela atividade? Este estudo objetivou analisar o custo socioambiental de um antigo garimpo de ouro a agricultores familiares da área da Pista do Cabeça, município de Alta Floresta – MT. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa, cuja análise se baseia em percepções e memórias de 15 agricultores familiares, coletadas por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas. O garimpo deixou um rastro de escavações, fragmentos de terras inférteis e margens de rios e igarapés devastadas. O solo e a vida aquática ainda podem estar contaminados com mercúrio inorgânico e metilmercúrio. Os agricultores especulam que estejam convivendo com certas sequelas geradas pela intensa e longínqua exposição ao mercúrio, bem como ao “pó de garimpo” (dióxido de silício), gerado pela detonação de rochas. As restrições de acesso da população local a serviços médicos especializados, bem como a escassez de estudos ecossistêmicos, limitam o conhecimento da relação entre a atual prevalência de doenças crônicas e os métodos de exploração de ouro, usados na região.
