Slave soldiers are a distinctively Muslim phenomenon. Though virtually unknown in the non-Muslim world, they have been a constant and pervasive feature of the Muslim Middle East from the ninth century AD into modern times. Why did Muslim rulers choose to place military and political power in the hands of imported slaves? It is this question which Dr Crone seeks to answer. Concentrating on the period from the rise of the Umayyads to the dissolution of the 'Abbasid empire (roughly AD 650–850), she documents the consequences of the fusion between religion and politics in Islam, which she sees as an essential forging characteristic of the Muslim social structure and state. Primarily addressed to specialists and advanced students of Arabic and Islamic history, the book will also appeal to comparative historians and social anthropologists.
SUMMARYInocula of polluted water naturally infected with salmonellas effectively distinguished six brands of selenite and six brands of tetrathionate enrichment media into satisfactory and unsatisfactory categories. Minimal inocula of pure cultures differentiated the tetrathionates, but not the selenites. Inocula of naturally infected chicken giblets suggested that there was a difference between two comparable brands of tetrathionate, but this was not statistically significant. The difference was, however, clearly demonstrated by minimal inocula of pure cultures.Intensive investigation of two inferior tetrathionates revealed inhomogeneity in the distribution of brilliant green in one bottle of one brand. The importance of the salmonella serotype and even the colonial variant used for the pure culture inoculum was also demonstrated.
SUMMARYDuring a period of five years 1192 water samples from swimming pools were examined for staphylococci and 338 for coliform organisms only. Eighty-nine different pools were sampled.Numbers of staphylococci, estimated by the membrane filtration technique did not bear any significant relation to either bathing load or concentration of free chlorine.Wide variation in the staphylococcal count was observed when different parts of a pool were sampled on the same occasion. The only practicable standard for pool samples in relation to staphylococci would appear to be that these organisms should be absent from 100 ml. water when the pool has been out of use during at least ten hours before sampling if filtration and chlorination are adequate.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
