This study aims to see the effect of practicing urban farming in limited space in landed houses, especially during this pandemic. Pandemic forces us to stay at home at all times while continuing to do our daily activities of working and studying. This results in a shifting of time consumption we used to spend time commuting to work for other activities, including urban farming at home. Urban farming is the activity of growing and producing food in the city, as food is one of the basic needs of humans to survive. In addition to supporting food security within the area, it gives benefits also to the people’s health and well-being, as well as the surrounding environment. The methods used in this study are exercising and observing the availability of space and its effect on people and living space (environment) from the literature review point of view and case studies. This study eventually finds that performing urban farming as a choice of activity is proven to be beneficial in maintaining people’s health and wellbeing.
This paper reviews studies on sustainable housing criteria based on their implementation. This paper proposes studies on sustainable housing criteria from previous researchers. The analysis of this study was developed by reviewing several studies about sustainable housing criteria in general. Sustainable development has become an important concept to help humans achieve their needs wisely. This concept can be achieved through a decision-making process that integrates and recognizes the existence of environmental, economic, and social problems. The adaptation of the sustainable development concept within the scope of architecture creates an understanding of the existence of sustainable architecture. Sustainable architecture has begun to apply the concept of sustainable development from the small case to the large scale buildings. It can be implemented through the logical use of technology in buildings, energy-saving, creating and using efficient construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition models, as well as minimizing the negative impact of buildings on the environment. Above all, it is important to keep in mind that the biggest challenges to sustainable development can start from the housing to the larger space. This paper may help readers to identify how sustainable practices on the scale of housing are developed and applied all the implementations through 10 criteria of sustainable housing based on environmental, economic, and social aspects from the previous journals. These 10 criteria also can be used to create a parameter or assessment of sustainable housing as an outline by adjusting the implementation to the prevailing needs in further study.
Rivers have immense benefits for the environment and community. They become one of the water resources for the community and an option for community recreation area. Rivers also provide habitat and balance the ecosystem for the environment. Currently, the community is neglecting many rivers in that their water becomes polluted and unusable. This is the reason behind the existence of riverbank development, including in Cisadane Riverside located in Tangerang, Indonesia. This study was carried out in Cisadane Riverside to observe and analyse the elements that constructed the riverbank as public facilities toward sustainable pillars: environment, social and economy for urban sustainability. Observation and interview were conducted in six zones along the Cisadane Riverside. Regarding the riverbank development, it is important to pay attention to the environmental aspect to maintain the urban ecology while achieving the social and economic aspects. In conclusion, the riverbank development that considered the integrated environment, social and economic aspects would create the activity and interaction space for supporting both the urban sustainability particularly for the riverbank itself. The result of this study would be used as the reference for riverfront development towards urban sustainability in Indonesia.
Indonesia is located in a hot, humid climate, and one of the abundant and indigenous natural resources in Indonesia is bamboo plants. People in everyday life widely use bamboo. However, the community has not been adequately educated about bamboo, especially in terms of (1) processing, (2) preserving, and (3) maintaining bamboo. These three things have essential roles in supporting the bamboo's durability since bamboo is susceptible to destructive organisms. In this study, the durability of bamboo was observed, interviewed, and analyzed to examine the most optimal bamboo preservation method for construction use in a hot, humid climate. The type of bamboo and the characteristics of bamboo were assessed: both by chemical and traditional methods of preservation. This study found that in terms of durability, the traditional preservation method results in stronger durable bamboos. The traditional methods are considered to be more optimal for bamboo building construction in a hot, humid climate.
Nowadays the green open spaces are becoming more difficult to find, especially in urban areas. Malls and other physical buildings tend to dominate public options for recreation. This paper describes the community engagement program in developing community park in Bogor Regency that has been done within JulyDecember 2016, which was initiated by American Red Cross in Indonesia. Implemented together with Indonesian Red Cross and Universitas Indonesia, the program highlighted the necessity of community park revitalization as nature-based infrastructure that also functioned as refugee point when disaster occurs. The "Charrette" was used as the method to collect information from the community and to make sure bottom-up approach was applied. This way, the community park can be revitalized based on the needs of the community. This paper accesses the process of green open spaces revitalization in the 4 selected locations in Bogor Regency. It observes the sustainability potentials based on the preconditions in each locations. In general, the processes show that community engagement in terms of enthusiasm, willingness to contribute voluntary and financial capital highly influence the sustainability of the green open space. Based on the assessment, one of the four green open spaces hold the highest sustainability potential.
