Depuis une vingtaine d’années, le cadre législatif antidiscriminatoire français interdit, entre autres, les discriminations à l’embauche selon l’âge. Pourtant, celles qui concernent le « trop vieil » âge demeurent une réalité sociale. La grande distribution dite sportive présente une moyenne d’âge de son personnel commercial faible, cela a fait d’elle un terrain empirique pertinent. En nous appuyant sur une analyse thématique de contenu d’une trentaine d’annonces d’offre d’emploi et d’une vingtaine d’entretiens semi-directifs menés auprès de « recruteurs », nous avons choisi de porter l’attention sur les éventuels « effets des annonces » sur la stigmatisation/discrimination à l’embauche des travailleurs âgés. Cet article montre que ce canal formel de recrutement procède en effet d’une sélection opérée en amont, à distance et indirectement par les employeurs. Une entorse à l’adresse normative de la grande majorité des écrits publics français favorisant le tutoiement et l’usage intensif et ambigu de la métaphore sportive, entre « pratique » et « passion » sont les deux pratiques discursives mises au jour.
