Die Ansicht, die frankischen Jurafaunen seien hinreichend bekannt und bedurften keiner neuen Durcharbeitung, findet man merkwurdigerweise weitverbreitet. Zu U nrecht I Welche Resultate del' planmlWig sammelnde und das in zahlreichen Sammlungen zerstreut liegende Material berucksichtigende Palaontologe zu erwarten hat, zeigt die VOl' einigen J ahren erschienene Schrift von SCHMIDTILL (Palaeontographica 47-48) uber die Fauna des frankischen Doggersandsteins (Dogger (:J), die gegeniiber den 43 Arten, die der letzte Bearbeiter M. SCHLOSSER (1901) aufzahlte, nicht weniger als 183 verschiedene Arten nachweist; darunter befinden sich zahlreiche bis dahin aus dem unteren Dogger Frankens noch nicht zitierte Gattungen und ein groBer Teil der von SCHMIDTILL beschriebenen Arten ist neu. Die Auswertung dieses Formenschatzes und die Verfolgung stammesgeschichtlicher und biologischer Zusammenhange war in dem gewunschten MaBe bisher noch nicht moglich, da die Faunen des alteren Opalinustones und der jiingeren Sowerbyi-Zone vergleichsweise zu durftig waren und auch' nur die Fossillisten SCHLOSSER'S, aber keine monographischen Bearbeitungen vorlagen. Es war daher fUr mich von Interesse, die Fauna des frankischen Opalinustones nochmals an Hand selbst gesammelten Materials sowie der VOl' aHem in der Miinchener Sammlung liegenden KoHektionen zusammenzusteilen. Die Cephalopoden muBten hier wegbleiben, da diese sowie die Stratigraphie Herr Professor KRUMBECK in Erlangen bearbeiten wird. 1m ubrigen wurden aile mir zuganglichen Stucke hier verwertet, auch die besser bekannten Arten, urn den rnonographischen Charakter dieser Stu die zu wahren. Auf die Foraminiferen wurde wie sonst ublich auch hier nicht eillgegangen. Ihre Bearbeitung hat Herr FRANKE in Arnstadt uuternommen.
Mit 5 Textabbildungen1m Jahre 1930 beschrieb J. WEIGELT in der WALTHER-Festschrift einen aus dem deutschen Kupferschiefer stammenden Torso eines Chamaeleo-artigen Tieres als Palaeochamaeleo jaekeli n. g. n. sp.Diese iiberaus interessante, durch seine ExtremWiten sich als Bewohner des Festlandes bzw. als kletterndes Tier sich erweisende Form \vurde provisorisch bei den Rhynchocephalia eingereiht, da zwei SchHifenbogen vorhanden zu sein schienen.Durch den Nachweis PARRING'l'ON'S, daB die Lacertilia von diapsiden Vorfahren abstammen (bewiesen war das bisher nicht, wurde aber von den meisten Autoren angenommen), kam ich auf den Gedanken, daB die von WEIGELT als Palaeochamaeleo (da dieser Name vergeben war, schlug ich im Fossilium Catalogus Weigeltisaurus nov. nom. vor) beschriebene Form ein primitiver Lacertilier sein konnte, der dann das diapside Vorstadium der Chamaeleons (Rhiptoglossa) reprasentieren wurde. Dieser Gedanke drangte sich urn so mehr auf, als sich heute zeigt, daB die Evolution weitgehend in parallelen Reihen .verlief und man theoretisch annehmen kann, daB sich die verschiedenen Lacertilierstamme schon im diapsiden Vorstadium getrennt hatten Herr Prof. WEIGELT, an dessen Institut ich jetzt arbeite, regte mich an, die interessante Form nochmals zu iiberpriifen, wobei ich zu einem abweichenden Ergebnis kam, das ich hiermit der Offentlichkeit ubergeben mochte, obwohl ich bei dem teilweise recht ungunstigen Erhaltungszustand manche Frage, die von Wichtigkeit gewesen ware, nicht lOsen konnte. 12*
Mit Tafel 16-23 und 7 Abbildungen Einleitung Die Fauna der hOheren Keuperhorizonte von Halberstadt hat kurz vor dem Kriegc wegen ihrcr guten Erhaltung und der stammesgeschichtlichen Bedeutung ihrer Komponenten berechtigtes Aufsehen erregt, hat ja kein Geringerer als OTTO JAEKEL ihre Bergung, Praparation und wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung durchgefUhrt. Weitere systematische Grabungen, die geplant waren, konnten nicht durchgefUhrt werden. Dagegen hat der Direktor des stadtischen Museums in Halberstadt, Herr A. HEMPRICH die Fundstelle llberwachen lassen. Obwohl keine systematischen Ausgrabungen vorgenommen werden konnten, wurde doch jeder von den Arbeitern der Ziegelei angetroffene Fund sofort zum Museum gemeldet und von dort aus geborgen, so daD sich im Laufe der Jahre ein sehr reiches Material ansammelte, das hier beschrieben werden soIl. Es erganzt das frllher von Jaekel gegebene faunistische Bild ganz erheblich. Der groDe von JAEKEL erzielte Fortschritt bestand darin, daD zum ersten Male die Osteologie eines triassischen Saurischiers und einer Keuperschildkrote genau bekannt wurde. Triassochelys entspricht ungefahr den Erwartungen, die wir uns theoretisch von ciner sehr urspri,i.nglichen Schildkrote bilden mllssen und hat sogar noch Zahne, das letzte Mal in der Stammesgeschichte der Schildkrciten. Weiter beschrieb JAEKEL einen guten Schadel von Plagiosaurus, einem Vertreter froschiihnlicher Labyrinthodontia. Seitdem sind etwa 25 Jahre verflossen. Die Halberstadter Triasfunde wurden durch Funde anderer Horizonte und Gegenden vielfach erganzt. Aber auch JAEKEL'S Fundstelle hat ncues hochwertiges Material geliefert, das wieder einen schlagenden Beweis fUr die Lllckenhaftigkeit 1) Diese Arbeit wurde von der naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultat der Universitat Halle a.
