A synthesis concerning fishes from Upper Paraná River basin is presented, based on data from fish-collections, literature, and new field samples. Three hundred and ten species, pertaining to 11 orders and 38 families, are referred to the drainage, elevating anterior estimates. Concerning total species, 236 (76.1%) are autochthonous, 67 (21.6%) are allochthonous, and seven (2.3%) are exotic. Principal causes of occurrence of non-native species are: a) dispersal from the Lower Paraná, after the construction of Itaipu dam, and b) escapes from aquaculture farms. Most species (65%) are small-sized, having less than 21 cm of length, and the great majority occurs only in headwaters and small streams. One of the best known and most studied in Brazil, Upper Paraná ichthyofauna richness is far from reaching actual numbers, considering the exponential elevation of species presented herein. Indeed, in the last years various new species have been described and around 50 other species, already recognized as new, are now under description. The improvement on the knowledge about Upper Paraná ichthyofauna is proportional to the number of researchers involved with studies in the area and, unequivocally, reflects recent initiatives stimulating and incrementing taxonomic research, and also improving access to fish collections and to poor or never-sampled areas. However, if we are going to maintain the number of species descriptions per year of last decade, the 50 new species already recognized, will be described only in the next ten years, a period too long. In consequence it is very important that scientific community and grant agencies find and offer initiatives in order to elevate the number of new taxa descriptions per year. Keywords: fishes, freshwater, southeasten Brazil, inventory, transposition.
Four populations of Astyanax aff. fasciatus of the upper rio Tibagi (municipal district of Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil), had their karyotypes and morphometry analyzed. The cytogenetic data show the occurrence of distinct karyotypes (cytotypes), here named cytotype A, with 2n=48 chromosomes (6m+18sm+14st+10a), cytotype B, with 2n=50 chromosomes (8m+18sm+14st+10a) and cytotype C, with 2n=50 chromosomes (8m+18sm+14st+10a). The distribution pattern of the constitutive heterochromatin was very similar between cytotypes A and B, but diverged in relation to cytotype C. Distinct cytotypes may occur in sympatry in the upper rio Tibagi region, with the exception of the Furna 2 sample, which presents cytotype A exclusively. In addition, a specimen with 2n=49 chromosomes (7m+18sm+14st+10a) was also found and, by the characteristics presented, may be a consequence of a rare hybridization event between cytotypes A and B. The morphometric analyses of canonical variates indicate a consistent isolation of the Furna 2 sample, while the other samples seem to be superimposed, indicating a possible gene flow or even a recent isolation event. This model points to a probable complex of cryptic species in the studied region.
Rhyacoglanis, a new genus of the South American freshwater catfish family Pseudopimelodidae is described from cis-Andean portions of the continent. Rhyacoglanis is distinguished from other genera of the family by three synapomorphies: presence of a light blotch on the cheek; a connection between the middle of the dark caudal-fin stripe and the dark caudal-peduncle pigmentation; and 30-35 total vertebrae. Species of Rhyacoglanis are rheophilic and strongly associated with rapids and other swift-flowing waters. A phylogenetic analysis based on 41 morphological characters yields a hypothesis of monophyly of the Pseudopimelodidae and Rhyacoglanis. Pimelodus pulcher Boulenger, 1887, from the western Amazon basin is designated as type-species of the new genus and redescribed. Four new species are described: Rhyacoglanis annulatus, from the río Orinoco basin, with a nearly ringed dark band on the caudal peduncle, and a larger distance between anus and anal-fin origin; R. epiblepsis, from the rio Madeira basin, with numerous dark spots scattered on the body, and rounded caudal-fin lobes; R. paranensis, from the upper rio Paraná basin, with three distinct dark bands on the body, and 31-33 total vertebrae; and R. seminiger, from the rio Juruena basin, with subdorsal and subadipose dark bands fused anteroposteriorly, and a separate dark band on the caudal peduncle. Keywords: Biodiversity, Identification key, Phylogeny, Systematics, Taxonomy. Pimelodus pulcher Boulenger, 1887 é designada a espécie-tipo do gênero novo e redescrita.
The gross morphology of the brain of the pseudopimelodid Pseudopimelodus bufonius is described and compared with congeners. Observations were made on removed brains after elimination of bones from the top of the skull and severing of the cranial nerves and the spinal cord. Nine morphometric characters associated with the major subdivisions of the brain were identified, seven of which revealed significant differences among the species examined. The corpus cerebelli in all examined species of the genus is the largest structure of the brain. The behavior of the species of Pseudopimelodus is still unknown, but in other teleosts that condition is typically correlated with a higher degree of motor coordination. Relative size proportions of the tectum opticum, eminentia granularis, lobus facialis and lobus vagi, might be related to carnivory and an enhanced capacity for food selection.
ABSTRACT. Fish diversity in the UHE Escola Engenharia Mackenzie (Capivara) reservoir, Paranapanema River, upper Rio Paraná basin, Brazil, and the importance of large tributaries in its maitenance. Fish samples were taken in four stretches along a gradient formed by the UHE Escola Engenharia Mackenzie (Capivara) reservoir. The diversity of species was analyzed by the constance, index of Shannon-Wiener and similarity of the composition among stretches through the Jaccard's coefficient. The reservoir presents a richness of fishes composed by 67 species distributed in 5 orders; 47% of the species are constant, 15% are accessory and 28% are accidental. The highest values of Shannon-Wiener diversity and Jaccard's similarity were obtained in Cinzas and Tibagi, wich are the most distant points from the dam and which present large tributaries. The lowest values were found in Cruzália and Porecatu, which respectively correspond to the stretches with lotic and semi-lotic environmental characteristics. This work demonstrates the extreme importance of tributaries for the maintenance of species diversity in a reservoir, as a result of the preservation of the original characteristics of lotic systems in those river stretches and consequent reduction of the damming impact. Hoplias malabaricus, the common trahira, extended its range into the Iguaçu River sometime in the last decades. To determine levels of genetic differentiation in neighboring basins of this nominal taxon, as well as to unveil the source of the invading population, we analyzed patterns of similarity of RAPD-PCR genomic markers of samples from Paraná, Iguaçu and Tibagi Rivers. The high genetic diversity of samples from the Paraná and Tibagi Rivers suggested strong population structuring or even the occurrence of undescribed species. All alleles of the sample from the headwaters of Tibagi River were present in the sample from the Iguaçu River, which suggests that the former population or another population with similar genetic makeup, may be the source of the trahiras of the Iguaçu River.
ABSTRACT. Trophic dynamic of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Perciformes, Scianidae) in stretches under influence of the Capivara dam (Paranapanema and Tibagi rivers). Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840) was studied in five stretches in Paranapanema and Tibagi rivers under the influence of the Capivara reservoir. The samplings were made on a monthly basis during the 1992/1993 and 1994/1995 periods and seasonally during the 2001/2002 period. The captures were made with gillnets with meshes varying between 2 and 12 cm. A total of 993 specimens had their stomach analyzed. The identified food items were grouped in trophic categories and analyzed by the percent composition method. The diet composition was compared among sampling periods and among stretches by the similarity analysis using the Bray-Curtis' coefficient. The results indicated that the consumption of food items was uniform in all periods and stretches analysed. The food items found were grouped in six categories: fishes, shrimp, Odonata, Ephemeroptera, other insect groups and "others" (plant material, detritus and rarely-found organisms). In all stretches and during all the studied periods, P. squamosissimus presented a carnivorous diet, and during the 2001/2002 period the item shrimp (Macrobrachium amazonicum) represented the largest portion of the diet. Concomitant with the shift from fish to shrimp, there were also changes in feeding behavior, shown by the changes in feeding frequency in food taking and in the variety of consumed food items. A large number of prey individuals were found in the stomach contents when P. squamosissimus fed on shrimp, with most specimens feeding exclusively on this food item. KEYWORDS.Introduced species, pescada-do-Piauí, non-native fish, freshwater, predation.
