Abstract. In 79 children who contracted measles the attempt was made to find the virus in epithelium cells of a buccal smear at different stages of the disease by the help of immunofluorescence. In 42 children (52O/o) this was successful. The test was always positive during the prodromal phase, frequently positive during the first and second day of the rash, but from the fifth day on no virus could be detected any more. In children who fell ill otherwise the test was invariably negative. It is suggested that immunofluorescence-microscopy is a rapid and reliable method for the establishment of the diagnosis of measles during the prodromal phase.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
